T&T 58 for two (Cooper 29*, Joseph 27*, Sheneta 1-2) beat Guyana 57 all out (Realeanna 14, Latoya 10, Jairam 4-11) by 8 wickets
Trinidad and Tobago earned their second victory of the ongoing Women’s T20 Blaze on Monday, defeating champions Guyana by 8 wickets in the Round 4 match-up at the Arnos Vale Playing Field in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Unsurprisingly, it was the spinners who sparked the win for T&T, led by 15-year-old Shriya Jairam.
The wrist-spinner dismantled the Guyanese middle order on her way to figures of 4 for 11. Jairam had Shabika Gajnabi (9) bowled off an inside edge with her third delivery before having Mandy Mangru caught for a duck in the deep two balls later.
Jairam received support from 18-year-old off-spinner Samara Ramnath, who claimed 3 for 10, as well as veteran Anisa Mohammed (2/ 8). The trio worked in tandem to restrict Guyana to 30 for 5 inside nine overs.
Another teenager, 17-year-old Brianna Harricharan, contributed 1 for 11, as Guyana were bundled out for 57 in 17 overs. Realeanna Grimmond top-scored with 14.
Afghanistan 181 for three (Zadran 87*, Rasooli 84, Seales 1-30) beat West Indies 143 for nine (Sampson 30, Motie 28, Rahman 3-36) by 38 runs
The West Indies suffered a 38-run defeat to Afghanistan in the first T20I in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on Monday. Half-centuries from opener Ibrahim Zadran and Darwish Rasooli, followed by a complete bowling display that was led by Ziaur Rahman and complemented by their spinners, helped Afghanistan to a clinical win over the Caribbean side.
Everything about the West Indies, on the other hand, seemed unsettled. Stand-in captain Brandon King rued his team’s inability to put together a complete display. “We showed glimpses of good cricket, but it wasn't good enough,” he said.
Gudakesh Motie’s rushing throw from mid-on, which found Rahmanullah Gurbaz short of his ground off the first ball of the contest, had given the visitors the perfect start. Windies had a second when Sediqullah Atal was brilliantly caught by King for 2 in the third over off the bowling of Jayden Seales, leaving Afghanistan 19 for 2.
The West Indies would fail to make any further inroads for some time, and through the Zadran/Rasooli partnership, Afghanistan managed to finish the powerplay with 51 runs on the board. The pair shared in a 162-run third-wicket stand, upping the scoring rate through the middle overs as the Caribbean side failed to pull things back.
Leewards 118 for nine (Joseph 27, Martin 23, Cumberbatch 5-15) beat Barbados 87 for nine (Callender 17, Alleyne 15, Joseph 2-10) by 31 runs
Monday’s top-of-the-table clash in Cricket West Indies’ Women’s T20 Blaze saw the Leeward Islands breezing to a 31-run win over Barbados at the Arnos Vale Playing Field in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The day’s proceedings did not begin as promising for the Leewards, however, as they lost the majority of their batting inside seven overs to be restricted to 47 for 6. Naijanni Cumberbatch was destructor in chief for Barbados.
The off-spinner accounted for Leewards' leading scorers this campaign, dismissing Amanda Edwards (12), Shawnisha Hector (6), and Reniece Boyce for a duck—on her way to figures of 5 for 15.
Despite the loss of wickets, the Leewards kept the scoreboard ticking. Opener Qiana Joseph finally got among the runs this season, hitting two sixes and three fours before falling for a 17-ball 27 top score.
Afghanistan 262 for six (Sadat 88, Khan 86, Pollard 3-39) beat West Indies 124 all out (Andrew 57, Pollard 11*, Nooristani 4-16) by 138 runs
The West Indies’ chances of advancing to the Super Sixes of the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup have been dented following a 138-run defeat at the hands of Afghanistan in their Group D encounter at the High Performance Oval, in Windhoek, Namibia, on Sunday.
With the result, Afghanistan leapt to the top of the standings on 4 points, while the Caribbean side slipped to second with 2 points from two games.
80-plus scores from opener Osman Sadat (88) and captain Mahboob Khan helped Afghanistan to a respectable total of 262 for 6 from their 50 overs. The former shared in an 86-run opening stand with Khalid Ahmadzai (34) to fend off the new ball, leaving Khan to finish off the innings with a 69-ball 86.
Seamer Jakeem Pollard and left-arm wrist-spinner Vitel Lawes accounted for the Afghan wickets between them with figures of 3 for 39 and 3 for 48, respectively.
After three rounds of matches, the Leeward Islands and Barbados have maintained a perfect record in Cricket West Indies’ Women’s T20 Blaze. The Leewards cruised to a 4-wicket victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Saturday’s curtain-raiser of the triple-header at the Arnos Vale Playing Field in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Barbados then defeated the Windward Islands by 3 wickets before Guyana’s 4-wicket win over Jamaica in the evening contest. The Windwards and Jamaica are the only two teams yet to register a win.
Guyana 87 for 9 (Taylor 24, Williams 23, Munisar 3-11) beat Jamaica 88 for 6 (Campbelle 50*, Grimmond 14, Wilmott 2-17) by four wickets
The grapple for runs in this season’s competition continued, with the highest total of the round being scored by Guyana, who completed a successful chase at 88 for 6 in 15.3 overs. Captain Shemaine Campbelle anchored the Guyanese batting with an unbeaten 50 as opener Sheneta Grimmond chipped in with 14.
Kate Wilmott and Chedean Nation grabbed two wickets apiece for Jamaica with figures of 2 for 17 and 2 for 25, respectively. There was a wicket each for Stafanie Taylor (1-12) and Celina Whyte (1-6). Taylor (24) and Captain Rashada Williams (23) had earlier helped the Jamaicans to 87 for 9 from their 20 overs.
