An Eye Out: CPL continues to hold up its end of the deal

“The biggest party in sport” is correct: the Hero Caribbean Premier League is cause for excitement throughout the region, it gives Caribbean fans something to look forward to in the midst of the continued slide of West Indies cricket, as it provides yet another host for existing—while also giving rise to—new rivalries. Yet, the ultimate purpose of the competition is to develop West Indian talent. And following the just concluded 7th edition of the tournament, it is safe to say that the CPL is doing its job.

There is a current crop of young talent (this generation), specifically in limited overs cricket, that the Caribbean has not seen in such an abundance since the initial dominance of the infamous West Indian mercenaries, who conquered T20 leagues around the world. And while several members of this generation emerged from that triumphant 2016 Under-19 World Cup team, there is no doubt that the CPL is what has provided one of the main stages for their ongoing growth, especially the uncapped players.

CWI APPOINTS PHIL SIMMONS AS NEW HEAD COACH OF WEST INDIES SENIOR MEN'S TEAM

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua - Cricket West Indies (CWI) announces the appointment of former West Indies player, Phil Simmons as the Head Coach of the West Indies Senior Men’s Team for a period of four years, as well as the appointment of three new selection panels.

Phil Simmons was confirmed as the Head Coach during a meeting of the CWI Board of Directors today, following the conclusion of a short but intensive recruitment process.  The Board had made it clear prior to the start of the recruitment process in September that “persons without West Indian heritage need not apply.”

Simmons served previously for a short period as Head Coach of the West Indies Senior Men’s team, during which he coached the team to the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup title, following which he was controversially dismissed. He served since as the Head Coach of Afghanistan, who he helped qualify for the first time for the 2019 ICC ODI CWC. His tenure as head coach of Ireland, saw them improve their ICC rankings and qualify for all major ICC events. Simmons’ latest coaching success came just two days ago when he coached the Barbados Tridents to the 2019 Hero Caribbean Premier League title with an impressive victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors in Saturday’s Final.

CWI President, Ricky Skerritt, shared his thoughts on the confirmation of Phil Simmons, “Bringing Phil Simmons back is not just righting a past wrong, but I am confident that CWI has chosen the right man for the job at the right time. I want to also thank the very talented Floyd Reifer for the hard work he put in while he was the interim coach.”

Chinelle Henry a girl who plays cricket

On Tuesday September 24, 2019, when the rain that had been threatening Kingston, Jamaica finally made good on those warnings, teaming up with strikes from both the drivers of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) and taxi drivers, it was a task in and of itself to make my 4 o’clock appointment with West Indies Women’s cricketer—Chinelle Henry. Still, I would see the inside of Sabina Park in good time. Though, we struggled to find a spot where the noisy dance moves of the falling waters wouldn’t affect the recording of our conversation for later use, as it would turn out, talking cricket did not give much thought to aesthetics—leaning against a dusty piece of wood in the halls of the famous Sabina Park sufficed. As for the well-spoken and pleasant Miss Henry–oh, she needed no invitation in directing the traffic of her journey—what I would deem an inspiration to aspiring young female cricketers—thus far.

Tridents beat the unbeatable Warriors to take the Hero CPL 2019 title

Barbados Tridents won their second Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title as Guyana Amazon Warriors’ perfect season unraveled at the worst possible moment.

The Warriors had won all 11 matches – including three against the Tridents – before the final, but came off second best in the face of an inspired performance from the Barbados outfit.

After Jonathan Carter’s unbeaten 50 off 27 balls led a recovery from 108/6 in the 15th over to an imposing 171/6 from 20 overs, the Tridents bowled and fielded for their lives to defend the target by 27 runs and break the Warriors’ hearts at the last, Raymon Reifer leading the way with remarkable figures of 4/24 from his four overs.

While the Tridents celebrate a well-deserved and comprehensive victory, the Warriors are left to reflect on a fifth Hero CPL final defeat in seven years. This will perhaps be the toughest to take of all given the flawless season that had preceded it.

Colonial Medical Insurance Super50 Cup dates and venues announced

Coming on the heels of the 2019 Caribbean Premier League, fans can look forward to another four weeks of exciting action, when the Colonial Medical Insurance Super50 Cup – the region’s pre-eminent, 50 overs-a-side competition – returns with a bang.

“With the new World Cup cycle beginning now, this tournament, among other things, presents a starting point towards the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023,” said CWI director of cricket, Jimmy Adams 

“It will allow us to start identifying players who will go on to play a role in our qualification. Though some of our international players will be touring India with the West Indies during the competition, it allows more opportunities and exposure for our young players.”
