ASSISTANT coach of the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) women’s team Merissa Aguilleira said the family atmosphere and camaraderie within the TT franchise is something she has never experienced before. That unity propelled TKR women to the inaugural Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) crown, on Sunday.
TKR defeated Barbados Royals by ten runs in the final at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts.
The TKR men’s franchise have called themselves a family for years.
Aguillieira said she experienced similar cohesiveness.

AFTER THE opening week of action in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in St. Kitts, the T20 show makes its way to St Lucia for another round of matches, which gets underway today with two games.
In the second game of a double-header starting at 6 p.m. (Jamaica time) at the Darren Sammy Stadium in Gros Islet, the Rovman Powell-led Jamaica Tallawahs will put their two-game unbeaten run on the line when they face the winless hosts, St Lucia Kings, who are led by South African batsman Faf du Plessis.
After comfortably getting the better of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in their opening fixture, Powell had to dig deep into his batting repertoire to conjure up a match-winning performance against the Guyana Amazon Warriors in their second game.

Despite the unveiling of the just-concluded 10-over competition dubbed THE 6ICTY, former West Indies white-ball captain, Kieron Pollard has resumed his cry for even more cricket to be played in the Caribbean.
“I have been advocating for [more cricket in the region],” he said. I said it after the last World Cup campaign, as well. That is how a lot of cricketers have been unearthed in the Caribbean: with our local tournaments.”
Pollard explained, “The Caribbean Premier League is great for the Caribbean players, in terms of a financial point of view.”

THE LEVEL of mediocrity generally displayed by West Indian players in the Caribbean Premier League, taking place at present in the West Indies, is a worrying sight.
It worries me because of the T20 World Cup that starts in Australia in a month’s time. Also, because WI are in the play-offs with the eight lesser teams in the tournament.
This tournament will also be played in Australia. WI are grouped with Zimbabwe, Ireland and Scotland. The other group’s teams are Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Netherlands and Namibia. The two top teams in each group will advance to the main tournament.
Already qualified for the main competition are Afghanistan, Australia, England and New Zealand in Group 1, with two qualifiers to be determined from the play-offs, while Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, South Africa and two more qualifiers will comprise the final 16.
As a Trini would say, “Well, boy, we reach!”

President of the Melbourne Cricket Club in Kingston Mark Neita believes their hosting of the induction of USA Ambassador Noah Nickolas Perry into the Cricket Hall of Fame could be an important moment for the development of Jamaica’s cricket.
Born in Jamaica, Ambassador Perry, an alum of Kingston College, helped promote the growth of the sport in the United States during his tenure as a New York State Assemblyman and earned him the right to be inducted.
“I did everything I could to make sure that New York’s government recognized the importance of cricket to the Caribbean-American Diaspora and that we are given rights and privileges to use the public parks and public sites to play the game we love,” he said in his acceptance speech during the induction ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket Club on Friday.
Neita is hopeful that as the US Ambassador to Jamaica, he will do the same in the country of his birth.
