Veteran regional and international West Indies cricket commentator Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira believes that the management of Cricket West Indies (CWI) may need to find out the “real reason” for Deandra Dottin’s resignation if they haven’t done so already.
Perreira’s is questioning whether CWI Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams as well as lead selector for women’s cricket in the region Ann Browne-John have spoken directly to Dottin to find out the root cause for her sudden resignation.
Perreira explained that while he read Jimmy Adams’ statement which wished the Barbadian-born Dottin well in her endeavours, he would also like to believe that the management of CWI did more to find out the real reason behind her sudden resignation.
“I did read the Jimmy Adams statement which you would expect when an outstanding player leaves the game of West Indies cricket. No doubt at age 31 she had a great deal to offer for maybe the next four years, she can now offer that to Barbados and all the other franchises.
HAVING signalled recovery from his shoulder injury, West Indies top-order batsman Brandon King is determined to maintain form for what he hopes will be a competitive showing from the regional side at the ICC Twenty20 World Cup this year.
King's comments came after he produced a Man of the Match performance which saw West Indies to a consolation eight-wicket win over New Zealand in the final game of their three-match series at Sabina Park on Sunday.
The 27-year-old, who missed the first two games — which West Indies lost by 13 runs and 90 runs, respectively — due to the injury, said he was always eager to get a taste of the action. And when the opportunity came, he had no intentions to disappoint.
Playing his first international game on home soil, King smashed a 35-ball 53, including four boundaries and three sixes, in a 102-run opening stand with Shamarh Brooks who was unbeaten on 56 off 59 balls. The partnership was the foundation for West Indies getting to 150-2 with an over to spare in response to New Zealand's 145-7.
"It was very frustrating [sitting out the first two games], but obviously you have to think long term when you have injuries because you don't want to put yourself in a complicated position. But, I was itching to get out there and thankfully, I was able to do it for at least one game this series," King said in a post-game interview.
The squads for the Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) and the Women’s SKYEXCH 6IXTY have been confirmed with the best players from across the region joining up with overseas stars. Both tournaments will take place at Warner Park, St Kitts with SKYEXCH 6IXTY from 24 to 28 August and the Massy WCPL running from 31 August to 4 September.
The three teams will be captained by Hayley Matthews (Barbados Royals), Stafanie Taylor (Guyana Amazon Warriors) and Deandra Dottin (Trinbago Knight Riders). Each squad will have three overseas spots with players from South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and the USA.
The Royals will feature Pakistani bowling all-rounder, Fatima Sana, who has played 40 times for her country. Sana was part of the Pakistan squad that look part in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games tournament in Birmingham.
Guyanese Tagenarine Chanderpaul enhanced his chances of a Test call-up, scoring an unbeaten hundred on the final day of the West Indies ‘A’ Four-Day game against Bangladesh ‘A’ at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St. Lucia on Saturday.
While the game ended in a tame draw, and by virtue the two-match series 0-0, it was Chanderpaul who stole the spotlight on the last day, scoring an unbeaten 109 (retired) in his 50th First-Class game as West Indies ‘A’ reached 277-5 in response to 300-9 declared made by Bangladesh ‘A’.
The left-handed Chanderpaul started the day on 21 with West Indies ‘A’ 43-2, and the opener brought up his fifth First-Class ton off 305 balls, reaching the landmark with a sharp single.
It was Chanderpaul’s third First-Class hundred of 2022. All told, his innings spanned 337 balls and 404 minutes and included nine fours.
Half-centuries from Sharmarh Brooks and Player-of-the-Match Brandon King helped the West Indies salvage a measure of pride after they defeated New Zealand by eight wickets with six balls to spare in the third and final T20 International at Sabina Park in Kingston on Sunday.
New Zealand took the series 2-1 after winning the first T20 international by 13 runs last Wednesday and humiliating the West Indies by 90 runs on Friday, which meant that Sunday’s match was a dead rubber with only pride at stake for the home side.
Set a target of 147, the West Indies cruised to 150-2 from 19 overs.
The victory was set up by an opening stand of 102 between Brooks, who was unbeaten on 56 and King who entertained the small crowd gathered with 53 from 35 balls, his first T20 international half-century on home soil and his fifth overall.
