Needing so desperately to erase the abysmal performance against India in the previous game from the minds of the viewing fans, the West Indies won the toss and elected to bat in Wellington.
The Caribbean side were immediately on the backfoot when Ellyse Perry got the ball to just nip away from the in-form Hayley Matthews, taking the top of the right-handers off-stump; before angling the ball across Kycia Knight, to kiss the edge of the struggling left-handers’ blade, leaving the West Indies 4 for 2 in the second over.
The experienced duo of Deandra Dottin and Stafanie Taylor then set about steadying the ship. The former, however, was caught at slip, flashing outside the off-stump, West Indies three down inside the powerplay.
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Cricket West Indies (CWI) Men’s Selection Panel has named an unchanged squad for the second Apex Test match against England. The match will be played at Kensington Oval from March 16-20. The three-match Apex Series is level 0-0 following a draw in the first Apex Test match, which was played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.
Nkrumah Bonner was named Player-of-the-Match. He scored a career-best 123 in the first innings and 38 not out in the second innings on the final day.
Lead Selector, the Most Hon. Dr Desmond Haynes said: “It was a hard-fought first match in Antigua and we decided to stick with the same 13 players for the second match in Barbados. Bonner demonstrated the way you should play, and we were very pleased with the way he played in the first innings and again in the second innings. It was hard work for all the bowlers, and we were very happy with the way they stuck to the task.”
The Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) have confirmed that this year’s CPL event will feature a women’s tournament with three franchise teams competing for the first Women’s CPL (WCPL) title. The three teams will showcase the best women’s cricketers from across the Caribbean with overseas stars rounding out the teams.
The three teams who will compete in the inaugural WCPL will be Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders.
The women’s tournament will take place during the men’s event inside the Hero CPL tournament window which this year will run from 30 August and 30 September.
ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced the formation of a new Emerging Players Academy, aimed at supporting the development of world-class players from the Caribbean. The Academy, which will run annually, will utilise the facilities at the Coolidge Cricket Ground – the new Home of West Indies Cricket, where the best young male and female cricketers will come to Antigua throughout the year for several High-Performance training and development camps.
The first intake for the CWI Emerging Players Academy will start in July 2022 and run for a year. Up to thirty (30) players will be selected from both the Men’s and Women’s talent pool, aged between 19 and 25. The aim is to bridge the gap after the West Indies Under-19 level and assist their progression into one of the six Territorial Board Franchise squads, with the intention that they will graduate to earn one of the fifteen (15) retainer contracts available in each team.
Still a ways off England’s first innings total of 311, the resumption of the West Indies fightback was dealt an early blow on Day 3 when Jason Holder nicked off with just 4 runs added to the Caribbean side’s overnight score of 202. Ben Stokes bringing about an end to the 79-run partnership.
With the English tail up, Nkrumah Bonner would immediately find another partner in wicketkeeper-batsman Joshua Da Silva. And though slowly, the pair added 65 runs, negotiating their way to Lunch without further damage.
In the fifth over after the interval, however, Da Silva was trapped in front playing back to Jack Leach for 32. This brought Alzarri Joseph to the crease with much batting responsibility on his shoulders, given the composition of the team. But the 25-year-old only lasted 7 deliveries after he fell for the trap set by Craig Overton and was caught at short backward square attempting the pull.
