ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced the West Indies Championship 2022 will resume on Wednesday, May 18. CWI unveiled the match schedule for the final three rounds of the four-day first-class red ball tournament for the six professional regional franchises.
The first and second rounds were played in February ahead of the Apex Test Series which concluded yesterday with West Indies beating England 1-0 to win the newly-minted Richards-Botham trophy. The West Indies Championship returns with all matches being played in Trinidad at the Queen’s Park Oval, Brian Lara Cricket Academy and the Diego Martin Sporting Complex. The third round will run from May 18-21, the fourth from May 25-28, with the fifth and final round from June 1-4.
Defending champions Barbados Pride lead the points table with 42 points, with Trinidad & Tobago Red Force second on 38.6 points – both recorded wins in their first two matches. They are followed by Leeward Islands Hurricanes on 24.6 points, Guyana Harpy Eagles on 21.4 points, Windward Islands Hurricanes on 10.8 points, and Jamaica Scorpions on 8.8 points.
ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has named 16 players for a white ball camp to be held at the Coolidge Cricket Ground from Thursday, March 31 to Wednesday, April 13.
There are two uncapped players in the list – allrounder Nyeem Young and Keacy Carty, the middle-order batsman. Young was a member of the West Indies Rising Stars squad at the 2020 ICC U19 World Cup, and has also played for Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League. Carty has been a consistent member of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes squad for the last five years. He was Player of the Match in the final of the 2016 ICC U19 World Cup won by the West Indies.
Head Coach, Phil Simmons outlined that the camp will focus on improving skill sets as the West Indies look ahead to two major global events over the next two years – the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia later this year and the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup to be played in India.
The three days that the West Indies Women had to wait to find out if they were in the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup seemed like an eternity according to the players, however, the regional side had lady luck on their side, and they will get a chance to play for a spot in the grand final starting tomorrow at 5 p.m. Jamaica time.
The West Indies will face Australia in semi-final one after the regional side finished fourth in the tournament on seven points. India were eliminated by South Africa in the final match yesterday. South Africa had already qualified for the semi-finals, but a win for India would have knocked out the West Indies Women.
For head coach Courtney Walsh, a final-four berth was just reward for the West Indies Women, who finished the group stage of the tournament with three wins, three losses, and a point from an abandoned game in seven matches.
“I feel happy and proud for the girls as we played some very good cricket. We deserved to be in the semi-finals. I know it was a long wait, but the excitement is well worth it, and we will give it our best shot.”
SOURCE: LAHORE, Pakistan (AFP) — Pakistan announced Monday that the West Indies will play three one-day internationals in Rawalpindi in June after the matches were postponed by the pandemic last year.
“Rawalpindi will host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches against the West Indies at the Pindi Cricket Stadium from June 8-12,” the Pakistan Cricket Board announced.
The West Indies will arrive in Islamabad on June 5 for the One-Day Internationals.
The ODIs were part of the West Indies’ tour of Pakistan in December 2021. But after five COVID-19 cases were reported on the West Indies side, the matches were postponed.
West Indies had to leave the tour after playing three T20Is last year.
