Applications for the sports marketing course from the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and the University of the West Indies (UWI) are now open.
The course has been created by the UWI’s Faculty of Sport and the Hero CPL marketing team and it will give students insights into the running of a hugely successful sporting event. At the end of the course, the students will be given the opportunity to work with the Hero CPL team as interns during the tournament.
Hero CPL offers internships every year which allows young people from across the region to gain experience in a number of departments including operations, marketing and sponsorship. The interns are fully integrated with the Hero CPL team and have become an important part in delivering a successful tournament, especially during a global pandemic.
MUMBAI, India (CMC) — Alzarri Joseph’s Gujarat Titans beat Nicholas Pooran’s Sunrisers Hyderabad in a last-ball thriller at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday to march to their fourth-straight win and back to the top of the Indian Premier League standings.
Incidentally, Titans’ last defeat was at the hands of Sunrisers nearly three weeks ago, but they turned the tables this time around, successfully chasing 196 for their seventh win in eight outings.
They started the final over requiring 22 for victory and Rahul Tewatia (40 not out) swatted the first delivery for six and stole a single off the second ball to reduce the target.
Rashid Khan (31 not out), better known for his mesmerising leg-spin then, clattered three of the next four deliveries for sixes in a sensational end to the contest.
The left-handed Pooran had earlier failed with three as Sunrisers rallied to 195 for six off their 20 overs after being sent in.
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Cricket West Indies (CWI) chief executive Johnny Grave has admitted to being surprised by the timing of Kieron Pollard’s retirement from international cricket.
The 34-year-old Trinidadian ended his 2½ year tenure as West Indies white-ball captain when he called time on his career earlier this month with the Caribbean side already preparing for the Twenty20 (T20) World Cup in Australia next October.
“I thought he would continue at least until the T20 World Cup in Australia,” Grave said.
“Obviously the 50-over game is that longer format, and the older you get, the more difficult it gets to play, and that may not have surprised me if he had called it a day after the T20 World Cup later this year.
PUNE, India (CMC) — Shimron Hetmyer had little impact but Rajasthan Royals marched to their third win on the trot and sixth of the season, with a convincing 29-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League here Tuesday.
The West Indies left-hander scored only three but Riyan Parag’s unbeaten 56 off 31 balls fired Royals up to 144 for eight off their 20 overs at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.
In reply, RCB stumbled to 115 all out with three balls left in the innings, fast bowler Kuldeep Sen (4-20) and off-spinner Ravi Ashwin (3-17) destroying the innings as the last seven wickets tumbled for 57 runs.
With the win, Royals overtook Gujarat Titans at the top of the standings courtesy of a superior net run rate, both teams perched on 12 points.
West Indies head coach Phil Simmons insists he understands and respects the decision of recently retired captain Kieron Pollard but insists the player’s passion and desire will be sorely missed.
After nearly 16-years representing the regional team and three years in charge of both the One Day International (ODI) and T20 squads, the 34-year-old Pollard announced his decision to step away from international cricket last week.
“Skipper it is sad to see you retire from the maroon shirt so early…I completely understand,” Simmons said, addressing the issue via Facebook.
“Your ability to give players your backing and trust to deliver and your strong leadership both on and off the field was a joy to work with,” he added.
