Former West Indies Under-19 representative Nyeem Young is taking a lot of confidence from his selection for the ongoing West Indies white-ball skills camp at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.
Young was among two relative newcomers selected for the camp that began on March 31 and ends on Wednesday, April 13. Young, an all-rounder and Kaecy Carty joined the more seasoned players like Shai Hope, Shamarh Brooks, Darren Bravo and Nkrumah Bonner in the camp aimed at making the regional players more efficient at the shortest forms of the game. Young said what he has learned so far has made him a more confident player.
“It brings a lot of confidence in myself to be selected to come to a camp like this,” said the 21-year-old Barbadian all-rounder.
“I haven’t played any List-A cricket either, so for the selectors and coaches to have me in mind for a camp like this is very boosting for me.”
MUMBAI, India (CMC) – Shimron Hetmyer emerged from a slow start to lash a pulsating half-century as Rajasthan Royals defeated Jason Holder's Lucknow Super Giants by three runs to climb to the top of the Indian Premier League standings.
Finding the going difficult after arriving at the crease at 64 for three in the 10th over, the left-hander struck an unbeaten 59 off 36 deliveries as Royals rallied to 165 for six off their 20 overs at Wankhede Stadium.
Hetmyer, dropped on 14 in the 14th over, scraped just 21 runs from his first 25 deliveries before exploding to plunder 38 runs from his last 11 balls, overall striking one four and a half-dozen sixes.
Pace bowling all-rounder Holder finished with two for 50, his last two overs travelling for 34 runs as Hetmyer launched his onslaught.
TRINIDAD and Tobago WOMEN’S Under-19 cricket team will travel to St Vincent and the Grenadines to play Windward Islands women’s Under-19 team in a five-match T20 series from April 14-19.
A media release by the TT Women’s Cricket Association (TTWCA) on Thursday, said the tour will benefit the teams as they prepare for the upcoming West Indies Women’s Under-19 competition in July.
The series marks the first bilateral women’s Under-19 tour between the two territories.
The trophy the teams will be vying for is named after two former regional women’s cricketers.
“To commemorate the occasion and in anticipation of an ongoing collaboration between the TTWCA and the Windward Islands Cricket Board (WICB), the teams will play for the Ann Browne-John and Nadica McIntyre (Browne-John/McIntyre) trophy.
“Trinidadian Ann Browne-John and Grenadian Nadica McIntyre have been two distinguished advocates and contributors to the development of West Indies women’s cricket. Browne-John is still actively involved in cricket administration and is currently the lead selector for West Indies women. She is also a former West Indies player. Until her passing in 2017, McIntyre was a champion and administrator of women’s cricket. She represented Grenada at the regional level.”
ROYAL Sports Group-owned Barbados Royals have announced the appointment of Trevor Penney as head coach for the 2022 Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
Penney will work alongside the Royals director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara.
A Royals media release on Thursday said, “Currently working as the assistant coach for the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with partner franchise Rajasthan Royals, Penney’s new role sees him continue his association with the Royals Sports Group.”
Speaking about Penney’s resume, the release said, “Trevor has vast experience working on the international scene with teams India, Sri Lanka, England and more recently with the West Indies white-ball team. He’s also been involved through his coaching with associate nations such as the Netherlands and the USA. The Zimbabwean has previously been a regular feature on the T20 franchise circuit with past experiences in leagues such as the IPL, the CPL, Bangladesh Premier League and the GT20 Canadian League.”
West Indies Women head coach Courtney Walsh has identified the need for more competitive cricket and developmental camps to get his side better prepared for international competition.
Although saying he was pleased with the Caribbean women reaching the semi-finals of the tournament after not having much competitive cricket, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Walsh said the next steps were to ensure the group increased playing time and provide more avenues for new talent to be developed.
“We have to play more cricket, more competitive cricket. We have to get a lot of developmental camps going, I think, to have players be prepared,” said the legendary Test pacer.
