Cricket West Indies has rubbished reports about the International Cricket Council (ICC) possibly asking England to step in and hist next year’s ICC T20 World Cup, originally scheduled to take place in the West Indies and the USA.
A number of media outlets including CricTracker, Sportskeeda and the Daily Mirror have reported that the venue shift is being considered due to a lack of infrastructure in the USA but CEO of Cricket West Indies, Johnny Grave, denied these claims and questioned the source of the information.
“No!” was Grave’s answer when asked about the validity of the claims being reported.
“I don’t know where that’s coming from. I’m in London for the World Test Championship final and I’ll be here again for the ICC Annual General Meeting (AGM) in a few weeks’ time so who knows what the agenda is. There’s no truth to it,” Grave added.
The West Indies previously hosted the ICC T20 World Cup in 2010.
ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel today announced that Johnson Charles has been named as the replacement for Gudakesh Motie in the 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament to be played in Zimbabwe, starting on Sunday 18 June.
Left-arm spinner Motie has not recovered from a lower back injury. Charles recently made a return to the West Indies ODI team for the ongoing three match ODI series against United Arab Emirates in Sharjah. He scored 63 in the second match, his 50th ODI appearance, and was named Player of the Match.
Lead Selector, The Most Hon. Dr Desmond Haynes said: “We want to wish Motie the best as he continues his rehabilitation. He is one of the players who we expect to feature in West Indies cricket going forward, so we want to see him recover fully so he can participate when called upon.”
Haynes added: “When we discussed the replacement player, we looked at the possibility of another spinner in the squad. However, we felt it was better to go with Charles. He is experienced at the international level, he will add value to the team for what will be a very important tournament. He also has knowledge of the Zimbabwe conditions having played ODI matches there before, so we see him as the right man for the job at this stage.”
Persistent rainfall in the city has forced the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) to shift the Girls Under-19 Inter-County to Berbice.
The tournament was supposed to bowl off on Tuesday with all matches at the Everest ground. However, rainfall on Tuesday kept the players indoor, forcing the GCB to take the games to the Port Mourant ground.
Three rounds will be played over two days- June 8 and 9.
On the first day, Berbice will play Essequibo from noon, while on the second day, Demerara will take on Essequibo from 09:30h, followed by Berbice versus Demerara from 14:00h.
Additionally, the tournament has been changed from a 30-over to T20.
T JOHN'S, Antigua (CMC) – Opener Kirk McKenzie believes confidence was key to his exciting form on West Indies A's recent tour of Bangladesh, and said he was now focused on building on those performances.
The 22-year-old left-hander scored 209 runs at an average of 41 in the three four-day "Tests", hitting 86 in the drawn opener last month before following up with 91 in the second game which the touring side won by three wickets in Sylhet.
"It was similar conditions to the pitches here in Antigua, so it was an easy adjustment for me," McKenzie said.
"I just used the form that I had here [during the Headley-Weekes Trophy] and carried it over."
He continued: "I was just really confident. The ball was coming onto the bat nicely, I was in good positions and it just happened I was scoring fast. I just took that and tried to make the most of it."
The 2023 Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier (WCPL) League will take place from 31 August to 10 September 2023. There will be an expanded tournament with increased number of matches this year, giving more opportunity for the best players from the West Indies and beyond to showcase their talents in front of the vibrant crowds at the Biggest Party in Sport.
Massy Group has confirmed that they will be returning as title sponsor for the tournament in a three-year deal that renews their commitment to support and grow women’s sport in the region.
In 2023 there will be seven matches played in Barbados and Trinidad. The three teams who will be taking part are the Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders.
The teams will be announced at the end of June with the squads made up of nine senior West Indies players, two emerging West Indies players and four overseas players. The emerging players will be under the age of 21 and chosen from a list provided by Cricket West Indies.
