ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced the appointments of the new Head Coaches for the West Indies Senior Men’s Teams. Andre Coley has been appointed Head Coach for the Test and ‘A’ Teams and Daren Sammy has been appointed the Head Coach for the white ball One Day International (ODI) and T20 International (T20I) Teams.
The new Head Coaches were selected following an open and transparent interview process, and the appointments were confirmed following the CWI Board of Directors meeting on Thursday 11 May.
Daren Sammy’s first assignment will be the three-match ODI Series against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Sharjah in June, ahead of the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 Qualifier tournament in Zimbabwe. Andre Coley’s first assignment will be the two-match Test Series against India in the Caribbean in July.
JAMAICA TALLAWAHS CEO, Jeff Miller, is downplaying speculations that something may be wrong within his Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise after the high-profile exit of winning captain Rovman Powell last week.
According to the CEO, Powell’s departure is part of franchise cricket and nothing more and doesn’t anticipate any disunity in the team for the upcoming CPL season.
“This is franchise cricket, players come and go so we don’t anticipate any division in the team. We’re anticipating to have a great team again this year and even though we haven’t announced our captain yet, he’s very enthusiastic on the upcoming season,” said Miller.
The Jamaica Tallawahs in past years was home to the likes of Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Powell, all of whom have moved on after captaining the team.
According to Miller, the apparent trend is not a deterrent for other big-name players wanting to represent the three-time CPL champions.
Hayley Matthews was the star with bat and ball for Barbados as Guyana suffered a second straight defeat in the Cricket West Indies’ CG United Women’s Super50 Cup on Wednesday in St. Kitts.
After Guyana posted 121, Barbados romped to a nine-wicket win in 17.1 overs with the right-handed Matthews racing to an unbeaten 72 off 42 balls (8x4s, 4x6s).
Openers Matthews and Kycia Knight, who made 40 off 54 (5x4s), put together 109 in 15.2 overs to seal a massive victory, one that would significantly dent Guyana’s hopes going forward.
Matthews, Shakera Selman, Shamilia Connell and Keila Elliott all took two wickets each as the Guyanese were dismissed for 121 in 34.3 overs.
Red Force Divas snatched a nervy one-wicket win over Jamaica in their second match of the CG Insurance Women’s Super50 Cup at St Paul’s Cricket Ground in St Kitts on Wednesday.
Jamaica, batting first, were dismissed for a modest 123 in 39.4 overs.
Despite the low total, Jamaica made TT sweat to reach the target. With wickets tumbling rapidly, middle-order batter Britney Cooper (52) was the glue to keep the Divas on course, closing on 127/9, with eight overs remaining.
This was the Divas’ first win of the competition, having lost to defending champions Barbados on Monday.
Jamaica had two main contributors with the bat – an unbeaten 59 from middle-order batter Natasha McLean and 24 from Chedean Nation. Besides opener Keneshia Ferron’s knock of 12, all other Jamaican batters made single-digit scores.
McLean smashed five sixes and two fours in her innings, which lasted 60 balls. Nation hit three fours.
Doing the damage with the ball for TT was off-spinner Samara Ramnath, who bagged an impressive 5/13, while Kirbyina Alexander got 2/17, Lee-Ann Kirby (1/11), Anisa Mohammed (1/18) and Karishma Ramharack (1/21) accounted for the other wickets.
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed the dates and host countries for the remaining 2023 West Indies Rising Stars age-group Championships following the Rising Stars Men’s U15s Championship which took place in Antigua last month.
The final three upcoming tournaments are the Women’s Rising Stars Under 19s, Men’s Rising Stars Under 17s and Men’s Rising Stars Under 19s Championships which are all important steps in the development pathway for the next generation of West Indies men’s and women’s cricketers.
The Women’s Rising Stars Under 19s Championship, consisting of six rounds of 30-over matches, will take place in Trinidad from 2 to 16 July. The Men’s Rising Stars Under 19s Championship will take place in St Vincent between 2 July and 1 August, consisting of five rounds of 50-over white ball matches and four rounds of three-day red ball matches.
