West Indies name squads for T20Is and ODIs to face India

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies selection panel today named the two squads to face India in the One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals next month. The selectors have kept faith with the players who recently played against Afghanistan in Lucknow, India. West Indies, the reigning ICC World T20 champions, will face India in three T20Is at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad on December 6; in Thiruvananthapuram on December 8 and at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, on December 11. Following that series the two teams will meet in three ODIs in Chennai (December 15), in Vizag (December 18) and in Cuttack (December 22).

Speaking on the squad selection, Head Coach Phil Simmons said: “We have three matches in each format, so we wanted to give each squad a chance to compete against India. No disrespect to Afghanistan, but facing India will be a more difficult series. Our players really got the hang of things, with the 3-0 series win in the ODIs (against Afghanistan), and I believe we will move from strength to strength.”

Back to winning ways for Holder’s West Indies

The West Indies got the better of Afghanistan inside three days, to claim victory in the first ever Test encounter between the two nations, in Lucknow on Friday morning. The nine-wicket victory means that Jason Holder has now won four of the last eight series he has overseen as Test Captain, in the last two years; drawing once and losing three times. And it was the two men who debuted in the previous series, against India in the Caribbean—Shamarh Brooks and Rahkeem Cornwall—that shone through for the visitors.

Brooks not concerned about late start to Test cricket life

At 31 years old, Shamarh Brooks is playing in just his second Test, but he will not allow that late start to create anxiety that could mean he performs at less than his best for the West Indies.

Playing against Afghanistan in a one-off Test in Lucknow, India, Brooks’ 111 helped the West Indies to a dominant position on just the second day of the contest.

The batsman’s debut century, in conjunction with Rahkeem Cornwall’s 7-75 and 3-41 meant Afghanistan ended day two 19 runs ahead of the West Indies first-innings total with just three wickets remaining.

Cornwall reflects on his 7 for 75

Rahkeem Cornwall bagged the fifth-best figures by a visiting spinner in India - taking 7 for 75 - as Afghanistan folded for 187 on the opening day of the one-off Test in Lucknow. Cornwall single-handedly helped West Indies gain the early advantage in the Test as they went to stumps at 68 for 2 and trailing their hosts by just 119.

Afghanistan were at one stage 84 for 1 and looked solid going into lunch after being put in. Cornwall had struck early but had to endure a frustrating time as Ihsanullah Janat and Javed Ahmadi built the innings. Afghanistan slipped to 90 for 3 at Lunch before Cornwall turned the game on its head. In the second session, Cornwall dismantled the middle-order to leave Afghanistan reeling.
