ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The Caribbean game’s oldest rivalry between Barbados Pride and Guyana Jaguars will be the headline act in the second round of the 2019-20 West Indies Championship, starting on Thursday.
Pride have been the bridesmaids in each of the five successive title seasons for the Jaguars in the Professional Cricket League era of the Championship – and this contest at Kensington Oval could have big implications for both sides and other teams too, for the remainder of the tournament.

He might be the oldest member in West Indies’ T20 squad for the Ireland series, but Dwayne Bravo feels like a “kid” after getting the national call-up that will mark his return to international cricket after a nearly four-year long hiatus.
According to Bravo, the three Ireland T20Is, which begin on January 15, were on his mind when he came out of retirement in December. So when he got a call from Roger Harper, the former West Indies allrounder and current chairman of selectors, last week, Bravo could not hide his excitement.
“It’s a great feeling,” Bravo told the Trinidad-based radio station I955 FM yesterday. “I feel like a kid again when I first get a call from Mr Harper that welcomed [me] back to the team [to play international cricket and they were looking forward to have me back. It is something that was always on my mind since the change of leadership and stuff. So just happy I get the opportunity to represent the region again and I am looking forward to doing my best.”
Jacqueline Williams of the West Indies will become the first woman to officiate as the third umpire in a men’s international when she takes the field for the first of three Twenty20 Internationals against the visiting Ireland team.
The 43-year-old from Jamaica, who will officiate in the position in all three matches of the series, continues the trend of women officials breaking barriers in the game, having already stood as an on-field umpire in men’s ODIs and T20Is.
Last month, India’s G S Lakshmi oversaw the third series of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in the United Arab Emirates, becoming the first woman match referee in men’s ODIs. Earlier in May, she became the first woman to be appointed onto the ICC International Panel of Match Referees.
Having completed their three-match One-Day International series on Sunday evening, which the hosts swept 3-0; the West Indies and Ireland now turn their attention to World Cup preparation. The teams will contest another series of three, this time in the shortest format, beginning on Wednesday afternoon in Grenada. The West Indies might have been dominant in the just-concluded ODI series, but it was an entertaining dominance from Pollard’s men, and so, Caribbean fans will be hoping their team prolongs the fun.
With the series set to highlight the return of Dwayne Bravo to West Indies cricket, CWI named the following 14-man squad to contest the Irish: Kieron Pollard (captain), Dwayne Bravo, Sheldon Cottrell, Shimron Hetmyer, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Khary Pierre, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Lendl Simmons, Hayden Walsh Jr., Kesrick Williams, Romario Shepherd.

This is the second major development initiative brought back by the Cricket department led by Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams under the Skerritt-Shallow administration, following last month’s appointment of Chris Brabazon as Coach Education Manager
Persons in attendance included a range of professions from physicians, physiotherapists, strength and conditioning coaches, sports psychologists and sports nutritionists.
Specifically under the leadership of Dr. Oba Gulston, CWI Manager Sports Medicine and Science, this medical conference coincided with the adoption of the new CWI fitness policy, which has the mantra of putting players first.
