ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel today named the 15-member squad for the upcoming CG United One-Day International (ODI) Series against England starting on 3 December. Shai Hope will again lead the team with Alzarri Joseph named as the new vice captain.
There are two uncapped players in the squad: batting allrounder Sherfane Rutherford and seam bowling allrounder Matthew Forde – who has earned his first call-up at the senior international level. The Selection Panel also recalled experienced wicket-keeper/batsman Shane Dowrich, who played his only ODI in May, 2019; and opener Kjorn Ottley, who played two ODIs in January, 2021.
Lead Selector the Most Honorable Dr. Desmond Haynes said: “We named Alzarri Joseph as vice captain as he demonstrated maturity and good leadership qualities for the Leeward Islands Hurricanes during the recent CG United Super50 Cup. We believe with exposure and opportunities he could be a future leader in West Indies cricket. Matthew Forde is a whole-hearted cricketer who has been impressive. He is one of the players coming through the West Indies Academy programme who can form part of the future.”
STEPHAN Pascal, West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 captain, is honoured to lead the maroon at next year’s ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup and wants to ensure his team is in the right competitive mindset ahead of the January 2024 tournament in Sri Lanka.
The right-handed batsman hails from Dominica and is currently in Trinidad with his teammates for a two-week training camp. The camp features five 50-over matches; three against TT’s U23s and two against USA’s U19 squad, who will also feature at the World Cup.
Pascal has been tasked with the responsibility of leading the region’s young team into battle against the globe’s top U19 cricketing nations, and he welcomes it.
“We just have to bask in the moment. I have to be proud to be a captain of a West Indies team. But I can’t dwell and stay on that, I have to go out there and do the job,” he told Newsday.
Left-arm spinners Ashmead Nedd and Joshua Bishop demolished Ireland Academy to set up West Indies Academy’s series-levelling, seven-wicket victory in their three-match 50-over series here yesterday.
Choosing to bowl first at Coolidge Cricket Ground, the hosts bundled out Ireland Academy for a paltry 103 in the 28th over, with Nedd (3-12) and Bishop (3-19) grabbing three wickets apiece.
Captain Nyeem Young (2-23) and fellow seamer McKenny Clarke (2-20) both chipped in with a brace of wickets, the pair contributing to the early slide that saw the visitors crash to 48 for five at the start of the 16th over.
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Pacer Jayden Seales said the West Indies A team tour of South Africa will be important to his short and long-term career plans.
The 22-year-old from Trinidad & Tobago said he hoped to use the trip to South Africa to reaffirm his bona fides and stake a strong claim for a recall to the senior West Indies side next January to February for the tour of Australia, where he broke down more than a year ago with a career-threatening knee injury that required surgery.
"I hope to perform well for the A team and pick up wickets, remain consistent, and maintain pressure for the captain," he said.
"This is a chance for me to try to get back into the senior Test team, and try to keep myself fit as long as possible and perform for West Indies for a long time."
Trinidad & Tobago-born Seales, who made his senior Test debut for West Indies three years ago at the age of 19, is still working his way back after being sidelined for almost a year with the knee injury.
The West Indies Rising Stars Men’s Under 19 Selection Panel has named 15 players for a two-week training camp in Trinidad. This will form as part of the ongoing preparations for the ICC Men’s Under 19 Cricket World Cup.
During the camp the players will have five matches at the National Cricket Centre at Couva. Three matches will be against the Trinidad and Tobago Under 23 team while the other two will be against the USA Under 19 squad, who will also be participating in the World Cup.
The West Indies will again be led by Stepan Pascal and the squad includes several members who toured Sri Lanka for four-day “Tests” and Youth One-Day Internationals in August and September.
