Justin Greaves produced a five-wicket haul to put Windwards Islands Volcanoes in command against Guyana Harpy Eagles on day two of their second-round West Indies Championship match at St George’s on Thursday.
After being bowled out for 294, Windwards bowled Guyana out for 169. Batting a second time, Windwards were 48-2, a lead of 173 heading into the third day.
Resuming from their overnight score of 292-8, Windwards added only two runs before being bowled out for 294. Ryan John remained not out on 51.
Greaves, Darius Martin and Preston McSween then combined to reduce Guyana to 28-4 with Kemol Savory scoring 20 of those runs. It was a position from which Guyana never truly recovered.
Former West Indies Test batsman Darren Bravo scored an even 100 to lay the foundation for Trinidad and Tobago Red Force’s first innings total of 369-8 at stumps on the second day of the West Indies Championship second-round match against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes at North Sound on Thursday.
The Red Force resumed from their overnight score of 151-3 with Bravo on 74 and Yannic Cariah at the other end on 32.
They extended their fourth-wicket stand of 69 to 101 when Colin Archibald trapped Cariah leg-before-wicket with the score at 186. Shortly after, Archibald dismissed Tion Webster for six as TT Red Force slipped to189-5.
Bravo and Jangoo set about repairing the damage but the score had reached 227, Bravo was bowled by Sheeno Berridge for exactly 100. He had faced 229 balls and hit 10 fours and two sixes.
West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite hailed the fighting qualities that his side and hosts Zimbabwe showed in the first Test that ended in a draw on Wednesday, saying it was one of the attributes of the format, which is still held in high regard.
Spinners Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase tried to force a dramatic finish in the match at the Queen’s Sports Club, but the Windies met resistance and the Zimbabweans salvaged a draw.
“I would obviously have preferred to win, despite losing a day, but I am very happy with the effort we showed [on Wednesday] from the start,” Brathwaite told reporters after play.
“Zimbabwe also believed they had a chance, but to see the fight we showed from start on the final morning till lunch, setting up to press for a win, was pleasing. I think Test cricket is great. To see how Zimbabwe would have fought and got themselves backl into game and believe that they could win, and for us to come and push for victory, especially after losing a day, says a lot for Test cricket
Gudakesh Motie took four wickets and Roston Chase two as the West Indies pushed for victory but Zimbabwe held on for a draw in the first Test in Bulawayo on Wednesday.
Chasing an improbable 272 for victory, Zimbabwe closed on 134-6, still 138 runs away but with only four second-innings wickets remaining.
West Indies had resumed on 21-0 with the West Indies Captain Kriagg Brathwaite on 11 and Tagenarine Chanderpaul on 10. The pair would add only another 11 runs before Brad Evans broke the partnership bowling Chanderpaul for 15.
Brathwaite was trapped lbw by Wellington Masakadza for 25 which brought Reifer and Blackwood together. Together they mounted a stand of 107 that was broken when Masakadza held onto a return catch off his own bowling to dismiss Reifer for 58.
CAPE TOWN, South Africa- The West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets in a low-scoring thriller at the Western Province Cricket Club.
Sri Lanka scored 107 all out in 20 overs. Nilakshi Silva top-scored with 29 (26) followed by Harshitha Samarawickrama 16 (20). Hayley Matthews finished with figures of 4-0-17-3 followed by Afy Fletcher with 4-0-12-2. West Indies got to the 108-run target with two balls to spare, thanks to a top-score of 46 (48) from skipper Hayley Matthews and 16 (14) not out from Chinelle Henry. Bowling for Sri Lanka Kaveesha Dilhari finished with figures of 3-0-11-1 and Malsha Shehani with 2-0-11-1.
Speaking after the match Hayley Matthews told CWI Media, “It was good to have a decent all-round performance today from a personal perspective. From a team aspect, I think the bowlers did a fantastic job to restrict them to 107, as we know they’ve got a couple batters who can really fire up. We still have areas to improve on, but the win will no doubt give us a boost heading into our first official match against England on Saturday.”
