The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has announced a strong national Under-19 team to participate in this year’s Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars Regional Under-19 tournament to be played in St. Vincent and the Grenadines from July 2, 2023.
The Junior Selection Panel, led by Chairman Andre Percival, has named a 14-man squad with 10 players returning from last year’s regional tournament where Guyana finished in third place in the Three-Day version. Last year’s tournament did not feature a Super50 format.
The regional tournament this year welcomes the return of the Super50 format which gives players an extended opportunity to showcase their talent.
Outstanding performances during the tournament can ensure players stake a claim for selection in the West Indies Under-19 team that will be selected to participate in next year’s Youth World Cup.
ALL-ROUNDER ROMARIO Shepherd believes his rest for the recent United Arab Emirates series was pivotal in his preparation for the ICC World Cup qualifiers starting this weekend.
The 28-year-old displayed an early glimpse of form, blasting a swift 53 off 34 deliveries in Tuesday’s opening warm-up, as West Indies easily brushed aside Scotland by 91 runs at the Harare Sports Club here.
“[The rest] was more mentally. When the skipper called me and told me I was going to get an opportunity to take a rest for a couple days, it was really refreshing for me to go home and spend some time with the family,” Shepherd said.
“I really enjoyed those 10 days and to come back here on the grind again, I’m ready.”
Tickets are now on sale for the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) matches. The 2023 CPL season gets underway on 16 August and the WCPL starts on 31 August.
The WCPL matches in Barbados and Trinidad will be double headers with the games featuring the home team from the Men’s CPL, giving ticket holders for these matches more action to watch and even better value.
With CPL having set another viewership record in 2022 with a total viewership of over 700million the interest in the tournament has never been higher. This combined with the return of matches to Barbados for the first time since 2019 means this year’s event is set to be bigger and better than ever.
At present tickets are available to buy online with box offices opening in the next few weeks with more details on these opening times and locations coming soon.
There has been an update made to the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) schedule.
These amendments are highlighted in yellow below and involve changes to the teams participating in the matches on these dates.
The final fixtures for both the CPL and Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League are below with the changes to the men’s tournament highlighted.
The venues for the matches in Trinidad have also now been confirmed with CPL and WCPL matches taking place at the Queen’s Park Oval and Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
WEST INDIES readied themselves for their ICC World Cup qualifying campaign with a convincing 91-run victory over minnows Scotland in their first official warm-up yesterday.
Captain Shai Hope (57) and all-rounder Romario Shepherd (53) struck contrasting half-centuries as West Indies recovered from 45 for four in the 12th over to reach 264 all out in the penultimate over at the Harare Sports Club.
Leg-spinner Yannic Cariah (4-46) and off-spinner Roston Chase (3-43) then wrecked the Scots’ run chase, the innings collapsing to 173 all out in the 34th over.
Brandon McMullen top-scored with 38 from 54 balls with seven fours, while opener, Matthew Cross, struck a fluent 35 from 37 balls with half-dozen fours and a six, but the resistance ended once Cariah and Chase got stuck in.
