Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced that Shane Dowrich, the experienced wicket-keeper/batsman has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect and has withdrawn from the West Indies squad for the upcoming CG United One-Day International (ODI) Series against England.
Dowrich made his international debut against Australia in Dominica in 2015. He played 35 Tests where he scored 1,570 runs including three centuries with a top score of 125 not out against Sri Lanka in Trinidad in 2018. Behind the stumps he had 85 catches and five stumpings. He also played one ODI in Ireland in May 2019.
CWI thanked Dowrich for his contribution to West Indies cricket and wished him the best in his future endeavors. Miles Bascombe, CWI’s Director of Cricket said: “We want to thank Shane for contribution when he played for West Indies. He is a disciplined, hard-working cricketer who always gave his utmost in front and behind the stumps. He had a memorable series in 2019 when he made an outstanding Test century on home soil in Barbados to help us beat England and win the Wisden Trophy. We respect his decision to retire and appreciate it is not an easy one to make. We wish him all the best as he steps away from the international stage.”
EVIN Lewis cracked a century for Pirate's Bay Raiders in a victory over Pigeon Point Skiers, in the Dream11 Bago T10 Blast at the Shaw Park Recreational Ground, Scarborough on Wednesday.
Lewis struck five fours and 13 sixes in his innings of 106 off just 32 deliveries to propel Raiders to a massive 176/7 in ten overs. Captain and Tobagonian Navin Stewart hit 26 off ten balls.
Jason Persaud grabbed 3/25 in two overs for Skiers, Joshua Yorke took 2/22 in two overs and Teshawn Castro picked up 2/30 in two overs.
In response, Skiers could only manage 106/7 in ten overs as Raiders won by 70 runs. Former West Indies Under-19 cricketer Mbeki Joseph hit 25 and Akiel Clarke made 21 not out.
Shaquille Duncan snatched 3/22 in two overs and Xavair Reid took 2/8 in two overs as Raiders maintained their quality form in the tournament.
West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 coach Rohan Nurse believes the training camp from November 12-25 at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva, was a resounding success.
Nurse, alongside team staff Rohan Clarke (assistant coach) and Brendon Ramlal (manager), held intimate indoor and outdoor sessions with their 15-member squad, in preparation for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka from January 13 to February 4.
Joining them were fellow staff Dominic Angry (physiotherapist) and Gregory Seale (strength and conditioning).
Initially, the squad was scheduled to play five games in Trinidad, three against the nation’s U23 team, and two against USA’s U19s, who will also feature at the World Cup.
“The two-week camp was quite beneficial in different ways. We utilised the indoor facility at Couva to get some conditioning and fitness work in, and work on skills,” he said.
NEITHER NICHOLAS Pooran nor Jason Holder had any impact as their sides experienced contrasting fates in the opening matches of the Abu Dhabi T10 yesterday.
Pooran made only one for Deccan Gladiators but they overcame his failure to beat Kieron Pollard’s New York Strikers by 22 runs in the first contest at the Zayed Cricket Stadium.
Holder, meanwhile, was dismissed for a three-ball duck and then went wicket-less from his two overs which leaked 25 runs, as Samp Army slumped to a nine-run defeat to Northern Warriors, in the second game at the venue.
Neither Pooran nor Holder will feature in next month’s three-match One-Day International series against England, Cricket West Indies announcing earlier this month that the duo were “prioritising preparation” for the other formats.
Cricket selectors should not ignore a rich vein of form for spurious reasons.
Lead selector of West Indies teams Desmond Haynes, along with the two other selectors – coach Darren Sammy and assistant selector Roland Butcher – conspired to choose a team without, at present, by sheer production of runs and irreplaceable experience, the best batsman in the West Indies.
Darren Bravo has scored the most runs by a distance – 416 runs at an average of 83 per innings.
On observing studiously the way he played in this recent Super50 tournament, in addition to his classy batting of last year 2022, one could notice the new-found maturity in his batting and, dare I say, in his leadership.
