Barbados Royals 161/4 (Athanaze 76, Evans 30; Green 2/21, Wasim 1/36) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 160/7(Brooks 78, Wasim 33; Holder 2/19, Ahmad 2/42) by 6 wickets
Barbados Royals returned to winning ways in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a six-wicket victory over the Jamaica Tallawahs.
The Royals won the toss and opted to field first and it proved to be an inspired decision in the early passages of the game.
The Tallawahs' innings imploded inside the PowerPlay with the loss of three wickets but good recovery batting at the back end led by Shamarh Brooks ensured the Tallawahs set a tricky 161 for the Royals to win.
The second season of the Women's Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) got underway with iconic New Zealand opening duo Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine handing the Guyana Amazon Warriors the perfect start to their innings, assembling a 50 partnership inside the powerplay without casualties. Devine, especially, latched on to an uncharacteristically erratic Hayley Matthews and the ill-advised leg-stump line the Barbados Royals captain offered up.
The introduction of Royals' wrist-spinning duo of Amanda-Jade Wellington and Afy Fletcher was able to pull things back once the fielding restrictions were relaxed, however. And following a missed opportunity by Fletcher in the field, who put down Devine early in the 9th over on 41, Laura Harris was able to gobble up the opportunity presented to her by Bates 23 (22) four deliveries later.
After the 50 runs scored in the first 6 overs of their innings, with the pitch offering up turn and bounce and Fletcher only permitting 17 runs from her 4 overs in the period, the Amazon Warriors only managed 47 runs in the next 8 overs.
The return of Matthews in the 16th over was where the Warriors dragged their innings back on track, with Devine dancing down the wicket for consecutive boundaries in the eventual 16-run over. Stafanie Taylor 22 (26) on the other hand, in trying to get a move on, was undone by the bounce of Qiana Joseph in the 18th, finished off by a wonderful take from Rashada Williams behind the stumps.
Trinbago Knight Riders 194/5 (Guptill 100*, Pollard 46; Holder 2/39, vd Merwe 1/32) beat Barbados Royals 61 all out (Holder 14, Powell 10, Ahmad 10; Salamkheil 4/14, Russell 3/13) by 133 runs
A dominant display with both bat and ball saw Trinbago Knight Riders record a 133-run win over Barbados Royals in the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
Barbados Royals won the toss and chose to field first, initially restricting the Trinbago Knight Riders before a fantastic 108-run partnership between Martin Guptill and Kieron Pollard fired the Knight Riders to a total of 194/5.
Barbados Royals chase was derailed in the powerplay, as they lost four wickets, and they were unable to recover. Eventually, they would finish on 61 all out, as Trinbago Knight Riders cruised to a 133-run win.
A brilliant batting display, followed by disciplined bowling led West Indies Rising Stars Men’s Under 19 to a superb victory over Sri Lanka Under 19 in the second Youth One-Day International on Wednesday at the International Cricket Stadium in Dambulla.
Jordan Johnson made a match-winning century after West Indies were asked to bat first. They scored 320-8 off their 50 overs. Isai Thorne then produced a quick spell of fast bowling which wrecked the Sri Lanka batting. The home side were bowled out for 125 in the 31st over as West Indies won by a whopping 195 runs. The series is now levelled 1-1 with the third and final match to be played on Friday.
The left-handed Johnson played with great aplomb as he recorded his maiden century in his seventh Youth ODI. He made 105 off just 79 balls with 12 fours and three sixes. He brought up his century when he got a single into the leg side which was met with rapturous applause by teammates and spectators. He celebrated by taking a “bow” and raising his bat aloft.
He shared a crucial third-wicket stand of 160 with Joshua Dorne, who made 56 off 73 balls with six boundaries. When they both fell, Tarrique Edward maintained the momentum with an explosive 53 not out which came off just 36 balls as he smashed two boundaries and three towering sixes.
In the second half of the match Thorne took centre stage as he grabbed three wickets in the space of 12 balls to leave the Sri Lanka innings in tatters at 40-6 in the 14th over. He ended with impressive figures of 7-3-18-3. He was well supported by new ball bowlers Deshawn Edwards (3-30) and Nathan Edward (2-17). It was also a good day in the field as wicket-keeper Divonie Joseph held three catches on debut – including two in one over off the rampaging Thorne.
The Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League is set to get underway at the iconic Kensington Oval at 3pm (local time) on 31 August in Barbados. The tournament will then visit Trinidad with the final taking place at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy at 4pm (Local time) on Sunday 10 August.
