The 2023 Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier (WCPL) League will take place from 31 August to 10 September 2023. There will be an expanded tournament with increased number of matches this year, giving more opportunity for the best players from the West Indies and beyond to showcase their talents in front of the vibrant crowds at the Biggest Party in Sport.
Massy Group has confirmed that they will be returning as title sponsor for the tournament in a three-year deal that renews their commitment to support and grow women’s sport in the region.
In 2023 there will be seven matches played in Barbados and Trinidad. The three teams who will be taking part are the Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders.
The teams will be announced at the end of June with the squads made up of nine senior West Indies players, two emerging West Indies players and four overseas players. The emerging players will be under the age of 21 and chosen from a list provided by Cricket West Indies.
The fixtures for the 2023 tournament are as follows:
SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates (CMC) — Opener Brandon King says he has bought into the "exciting ideas" put forward by the new white-ball management team headed by Darren Sammy, and believes the outlook for the side is a bright one.
The 28-year-old struck a run-a-ball 112 as West Indies beat United Arab Emirates by seven wickets in the opening One-Day International of the three-match series on Sunday.
King said the recent changes in the management unit had resulted in new perspectives in the West Indies approach.
"Change sometimes can be good, it can be bad. I think it depends on how you look at it," the Jamaican said.
"It's a fresh start and they've brought some exciting ideas and ways in which we want to play the game, and I'm very much on board with that.
"So it's looking very positive for the future and hopefully we can continue playing in the way we started in this first game."
Brandon King and Johnson Charles both struck fifties as the West Indies took an unassailable 2-0 lead over the UAE with a 78-run win in the second ODI at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
The day started brilliantly for the West Indies as the opening pair of King and Charles put on 129 for the first wicket after West Indian captain Shai Hope won the toss and chose to bat first.
In the process, Charles brought up his fifth ODI half-century before being dismissed for a rapid 47-ball 63. The St. Lucian hit eight fours and three sixes in his knock.
King, who brought up a maiden ODI hundred on the way to a man of the match performance in the first encounter, continued his good form with 64 off 70 balls including four fours and as many sixes.
The tourists then got solid contributions from Odean Smith (37), Keacy Carty (32), Kavem Hodge (26) as they were eventually bowled out for 306 with one ball to spare.
I must congratulate West Indies “A” team skipper Joshua Da Silva on his wonderful performances in Bangladesh. He led his team to a series victory by a convincing one-nil margin from three “Tests” over Bangladesh’s “A” team.
I say convincing because at no time did they look like they were going to lose. There were the inevitable snags along the way that were easily cast aside as a matter of course.
Beating any team on their home soil, where they’re accustomed to playing, demands a competent effort, and Da Silva showed the type of leadership potential to guide them there. While I’m at it, kudos must also be extended to the coach, Rayon Griffith, who fashioned his players into a confident unit to make the opposition struggle and with the purposefulness to fight back from negative situations.
Actually, the cricket played throughout was quite intelligent and gave the West Indians the self-confidence to capture the series.
Apart from his fine captaincy on the field, Da Silva was consistent with the bat, and a few times stepped up when he was called upon to rescue the team and build the score. This helped create winning positions from which one can gain a superior advantage to claim victory.
CASTRIES, St. Lucia - Cricket West Indies (CWI) and Republic Bank have successfully launched another edition of the Republic Bank Five for Fun cricket development programme in St. Lucia, in conjunction with the Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Education and the St Lucia National Cricket Association (SLNCA).
The launch which took place on 18 May at the Republic Bank Limited Castries branch, opened the second season of the programme on the island, giving primary school aged children access to this unique 5-over, 5-player all-inclusive format of the game.
St. Lucia was successful in piloting the first edition of the programme designed to generate interest and participation in cricket, formed around the principles of fun, inclusion and equality. Both boys and girls will have the opportunity to play as equals in a fun and safe environment, having access to cricket equipment and learning the fundamentals of the sport from qualified age-group coaches.
