English County side Kent are having the best Cricket West Indies Regional Super50 Festival they’ve ever had after climbing to second in Group B after a 30-run win over the United States. Kent, who are two points ahead of last year’s beaten finalists, the Jamaica Scorpions, and one point behind the Guyana Jaguars, scored 215-9 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium before restricted the US to 186 in their 50 overs.
Kent were able to get to a defendable, if not competitive total thanks to the efforts of their captain, Joseph Denly, who scored 96 from 109 balls to lead a batting card where a number of players got starts but nobody went on.
Scorpions vs Jaguars
A well-constructed 105 form 104 balls (5×4, 4×6) from Man-of-the-Match Andrew McCarthy led Jamaica Scorpions to 46-run win against Guyana Jaguars on the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern System last night at Coolidge Cricket Ground when the first half of Zone ‘B’ of the Regional Super50 concluded. McCarthy set up Scorpions for massive total before Kemo Paul (3-46) and Romario Shepherd (3-67) orchestrated a collapse with the Scorpions crumbling from 228-4 to 264-9 when their 50 overs expired. McCarthy dominated a 110-run fifth wicket stand with Fabien Allen who made a carefully constructed unbeaten 47 from 62 balls (3×4, 1×6). Chadwick Walton contributed a 53-ball 33 (4×4, 1×6) at the top of the order while Rovman Powell’s 34 lasted 53 balls with five boundaries. Set a second revised target of 215 from 34overs on the Duckworth/ Lewis & Stern System after 16 overs were lost to rain, the Jaguars were bowled out for 164 in 30.1 overs with only Shimron Hetmyer who hit three fours and two sixes in 40, passing 20.
St John’s, ANTIGUA – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has appointed Richard Pybus as the High- Performance Director.
In this new role, Pybus will work alongside the Chairman of Selectors and all the technical coaches in the region to improve the high performance programmes and standards within franchise cricket. His role will also include, but not limited to standardizing coaching and preparation for regional teams and overseeing a talent identification programme from the Under-19 level all the way to the WINDIES International level.
Pybus’ record with high performance programmes is well established. He is the most successful South African franchise coach of all time having won nine championships across all formats. The two-time South African coach of the year was part of a system that developed the likes of current South African, Captain Faf du Plessis, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel and A.B de Villiers.
The High-Performance programme aims to support the continued development of CWI regional franchise cricket and put systems in place to close the gap between regional franchise cricket and International cricket.
Richard Pybus said: “I am delighted to be re-joining Cricket West Indies in this newly created role. I am looking forward to working with Jimmy Adams and the rest of the cricket department to improve standards within a system that I know well. My focus will be on developing our high performance programmes and helping to identify and coach the most talented cricketers in the Caribbean.”
Pybus’ appointment is for an initial term of two years.
Pybus previously served as CWI Director of Cricket from October 2013 to December 2016, overseeing WINDIES victories in two ICC World T20s, an ICC Women’s World T20 and an ICC U-19 World Cup. Along with International Head Coach roles with Pakistan and Bangladesh, Pybus coached extensively in South Africa for Border, Titans and Cape Cobras, as well as Middlesex CCC in England, at domestic cricket level. He will be based at the CWI Headquarters in Antigua.
Man of the Match Shai Hope with 102 and Roston Chase with 72 were the stars in defending champions Barbados Pride’s crushing 183-run victory over Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners in Zone A of the Regional Super50 Festival at the Windward Cricket Ground this afternoon. It was the Pride’s fourth consecutive win. Set 255 for victory after the Pride made 254 for the loss of six wickets, CCC were marooned for 71 runs in 32.1 overs with veteran all-rounder Ryan Hinds top-scoring with 37. Teenage fast bowler Chemar Holder playing in his first fifty-over match for the Pride led the bowling with three wickets for 31 runs from seven overs. He was supported by off-spinner Ashley Nurse who took two wickets for seven runs from five overs including three maidens. Sulieman Benn chipped in with two wickets for no runs from two overs.
Hampshire vs Volcanoes
Half-centuries from discarded Windies opener Kirk Edwards and Andre Fletcher guided the Windwards Volcanoes to an easy six-wicket win over Hampshire CCC on Wednesday in the CWI Super50 Competition at the Kensington Oval. Edwards scored an unbeaten 71 and together with Fletcher (53) they put together a 94-run third wicket stand that helped the Volcanoes recover from 35 for 2 and eventually set the foundation for an easy run to 204 for 4 off just 36.2 overs.
ST JOHN'S, Antigua (CMC) — Leeward Islands Hurricanes suffered a second-straight defeat in the Regional Super50 when they went down to English County Kent by nine wickets in their Group B encounter here yesterday.
Hurricanes — without the mainstay of their batting, Rahkeem Cornwall, who has been called up to West Indies A duty — suffered a collapse and could only muster 183 all out in the 50th over.
Terrance Ward, batting at number five, top-scored with 71 but no other Hurricanes batsmen managed to make it past 20.
Fast bowlers Will Gidman (3-31) and Ivan Thomas (3-45) finished with three wickets apiece, while fellow seamer Calum Haggett picked up two for 37.
Kent coasted in reply, reaching their target in the 45th over, with 20-year-old opener Zak Crawley narrowly missing out on three figures with an unbeaten 99.
The right-hander faced 140 deliveries and struck eight fours, staging two key stands to wipe out any hope Hurricanes may have entertained of a come-from-behind win.
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua- Nikita Miller played a Captain’s knock of 52 not out and took 2 for 27 for which he was Man of the Match, to save Jamaica Scorpions’ innings against USA.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Scorpions playing without Chris Gayle, had 34 runs on the board before Chadwick Walton was caught behind off Elmore Hutchinson for 25.
Steven Taylor partnered with Rovman Powell for 41 runs before Taylor was run out for 22 and Powell was bowled soon after for 20. The Scorpions were 85/4 after 21.4 overs.
Fabian Allen and Andre McCarthy combined for 62 runs to rebuild the Scorpions middle order. But it was the partnership between Captain Nikita Miller and Odean Smith of 85 runs that took Jamaica to 255/8 from their 50 overs.
Nikita Miller and Odean Smith remained not out on 52 and 30 respectively. Elmore Hutchinson was the best bowler for USA, taking 3/40 from 10 overs.
USA Cricket had a shaky start to their run-chase. They lost Jaskaran Malhotra for 9 with the score on 24.
Xavier Marshall and Timil Patel fell in successive balls without either scoring. Leaving USA reeling on 25/3. But Sunny Sohal and skipper Ibrahim Khaleel started the rebuild.
Sohal went on to a top score of 65 before Nikita Miller had him caught by Andre Russell. Khaleel reached 37 before Andre Russell bowled him for 37.
The rest of the USA team couldn’t get the required runs, eventually all out for 156 in 49.1 overs. Handing Jamaica Scorpions, a 99-run victory.
