Bangladesh secured a comfortable six-wicket win over the West Indies at Providence in Guyana on Sunday to take a 1-0 lead in their three-match One-Day International series.
The win was Bangladesh’s first win on their tour having lost both the Test and T20 International series 2-0.
The win also means that Bangladesh have now won their last six ODIs against the hosts, a fact that West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran says the team is well aware of.
“We know Bangladesh has had us in the last couple series but that’s ok. I feel like we’re still going to win this series. We’re 1-0 down but we can come again on Wednesday with better plans and punch back,” said Pooran in a post-match interview.
“I feel honoured and excited to be a part of the Guyana Amazon Warriors. I’m grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to making use of it.”
Matthew Nandu could not be more grateful for the opportunity to join the Warriors, having been drafted as one of the two Under-23 players by the franchise ahead of the Hero Caribbean Premier League 2022.
The 19-year-old Guyanese left-handed opener earlier this year represented West Indies in the ICC Men’s Under-19 50-over World Cup, being one of three players from the Caribbean to score a hundred in the tournament.
Nandu’s long-term goal is to play senior international cricket for the West Indies, and the Canada-based student/athlete sees this induction in the ‘Biggest Party in Sport’ as a massive springboard.
“It means a lot,” he told News Room Sport at the weekend.
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — West Indies crashed to their ninth-straight One-Day International (ODI) defeat to Bangladesh yesterday, paying dearly for an ordinary batting effort on a sticky wicket at the Guyana National Stadium.
Mustering only 149 for nine in a contest reduced to 41 overs per side after rain delayed the start by 2 ¼ hours, West Indies then watched as the Tigers chased down the small target with a whopping 55 balls to spare, sending them to a six-wicket loss in the opening ODI.
For the hosts, it was their first defeat of the multi-format tour after sweeping the Tests and winning the three-match Twenty20 International series 2-0.
"In hindsight, it [total] was definitely not enough, but in saying that, it was difficult to get more, to be honest, batting first on that track," said Captain Nicholas Pooran, who failed yet again with 18.

In fact, the tourists who will be led by left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan will also miss the likes of Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Shami, as selectors have opted to rest many of the senior players due to the side's hectic schedule.
The series against West Indies bowls off five days following India's white-ball series against England, which runs from July 7-17.

Player of the Match Nicholas Pooran and Kyle Mayers scored half-centuries as the West Indies defeated Bangladesh by five wickets to take their three-match T20 series 2-0 on Thursday.
At Providence in Guyana, the West Indies white-ball captain hit five fours and five sixes in his match-winning 39-ball 74 while Mayers hit two fours and five sixes in his score of 55 made from just 38 balls.
The pair came together after the West Indies, needing 164 for victory, lost the wickets of Brandon King (7), Shamarh Brooks (12) and Odean Smith (2) by the seventh over with 43 runs on the board.
Together they added 83 in 51 balls before Mayers was dismissed by Nasum Ahmed, who had earlier had King caught at mid-on.
