It was yet another resounding victory for international certified cricket umpire Gregory Brathwaite who will serve his fifth consecutive term as President of the Barbados Cricket Umpires Association (BCUA) having attained 43 votes.
The electoral process was held last night at Kensington Oval where Brathwaite who has been at the helm since 2013 defeated Ricardo Harrison who tallied 19 votes. Leon Layne will serve as deputy having amassed 37 votes to Harrison’s 28. The latter also ran for the position of vice-president.
Speaking with Barbados TODAY from St. Lucia where he is on tour as an umpire in the ongoing home series between West Indies and Bangladesh, Brathwaite said he was happy that the membership has continuously shown faith in his ability to lead.
“The role of president in our association is really to look after the interest of our membership, to look after the development of our younger umpires and that is where my focus has been and befits what we do and what we offer to the game of cricket. So, I am happy that the membership feels I have been doing what they require or what they are looking for in terms of direction and leading the organization."
The fast bowlers showing the ability to take wickets from slow pitches was the biggest gain for West Indies from their 2-0 win over Bangladesh, according to head coach Phil Simmons.
Joseph was the series’ top wicket-taker while Kemar Roach became only the sixth West Indies bowler to take 250 wickets during the series. Kyle Mayers and Jayden Seales contributed with regular wickets while Anderson Phillip made an impressive debut in St Lucia.
“The first (Test) wicket wasn’t conducive to fast bowling but we got them out for low scores,” Simmons said. “In this Test match, to get them bowled out on the first day on a comparatively slow wicket, gave us the driver’s seat. The fast bowlers deserve a lot of credit. We have worked hard in the two series, and come out victorious. This one maybe wasn’t as hard as the first one, the important thing is that at the end of the day, the W is behind the two Tests. We won 2-0 in Bangladesh in 2021 as well. You have to take all those things, and sit back and enjoy it.”
The theme song for The SKYEXCH 6IXTY tournament has been released ahead of the first running of the new 60-ball cricket tournament which gets underway on 24 August in St Kitts.
The song has been performed by Naomi Cowan, winner of the Jamaica Reggae Industry’s Breakthrough Artist of the year in 2018 and 2019. Cowan co-wrote and co-produced the song with Skorch Bunit and Cool Blaze and under her independent label, 7th C Records.
Cowan has seen her profile grow rapidly around the world over recent years with her song Paradise Plum getting global plaudits and radio play.
ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed the international retainer contracts for the West Indies Men’s and Women’s players for the 2022-2023 season. A total of 36 players have been offered contracts for the period – which runs from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.
This is in addition to 90 players across the region who are contracted to Territorial Board Franchise Squads.
The West Indies Men’s contracted player list sees fast bowler Jayden Seales, left-arm seamer Obed McCoy and all-rounder Odean Smith awarded international retainer contracts for the first time. The West Indies Women’s contracted player list sees allrounders Mandy Mangru and Jannillea Glasgow along with batter Rashada Williams awarded international retainer contracts for the first time, all of which are development contracts.
It took the West Indies less than a session on Day 4 to complete a 10-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the second Test, subsequently completing a dominant 2-0 series victory to complement their 7-wicket win in the first Test.
West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite expressed pleasure with his team’s performance. “The confidence of the guys was high. I was really happy with the group [and] how we went about planning, and then executing, especially the batsmen. Kyle Mayers’ partnership with Jermaine Blackwood was superb, and that really set up the game.”
The West Indies gained 24 ICC Test Championship points via the series win but Brathwaite insists it was not an easy task. “I thought Bangladesh bowlers bowled well throughout the game [especially] the pacers. But it was good to see the fight we showed,” he said.
