West Indies Women’s head coach Courtney Walsh says he is pleased with what he has seen from his team, despite the ladies going down by six wickets to South Africa in the fourth One-Day International to surrender the series 2-1.
With regular captain StafanieTaylor and veteran batter Chedean Nation ruled out through injury, the West Indies could only manage to get 174 all out in 49.2 overs, despite 48 from Kycia Knight and 36 from Deandra Dottin.
Despite the loss, Walsh said there were lots of positives heading into the World Cup in New Zealand in March.
“I was pleased with the depth in the bowling combination and the consistency shown in the batting. It was pleasing to see Deandra getting some runs and Kycia also getting back-to-back scores. What I would say is most pleasing is getting Afy back out on the park and getting some overs out of her,” said Walsh.

Barbados and West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite has signalled his eagerness and readiness to return to the field when the West Indies first-class championship starts later this month.
The 29-year-old, the region’s marquee opening batsman, will lead Barbados Pride against Leeward Islands Hurricanes at Kensington Oval when the red ball season opens next Wednesday.
“I always see myself as a leader in the Barbados team and I’m happy to get back into ‘game mode’ and play for the country,” said Brathwaite, who guided Pride to the capture of the last first-class title in 2020.

West Indies Women went into Sunday’s decider against South Africa Women without Captain Stafanie Taylor and Chedean Nation; who were ruled out of the contest as Taylor undergoes concussion protocols, with Nation recovering, still, from a neck injury she suffered in the 3rd One-Day International (ODI).
This meant the visitors would be without their resident no.4, and a specialist batting no.6, with the only other batting option in the squad being the uncapped, 22-year-old Mandy Mangru.
And the gap in the West Indies batting line-up eventually revealed itself, as the Caribbean side suffered an epic middle-order collapse, losing wickets 3-9 for just 70 runs. Which would have been utterly disappointing for a unit that first, recorded one of their better scores at the end of the powerplay in this series—at 48 for just the loss of the one wicket—then, fought their way up to 84 runs, still with 9 wickets intact.
It took a 9th wicket partnership of 20 runs between Shamilia Connell and the returning Afy Fletcher to provide the West Indies a potentially defendable able total of 174.

The low of a One-Day International (ODI) series loss to Ireland. That’s what happened the last time the West Indies Men’s team played ODI cricket. That would have been fresh on the minds of Caribbean fans when India captain, Rohit Sharma, won the toss and inserted the visitors. And the manner in which the West Indies started their innings did not settle any nerves.
Following consecutive 4s off the bowling of Mohammed Siraj in the 3rd over, the drive proved Shai Hope’s downfall, as the right-hander was bowled by a delivery seaming back into him, attempting to make it three in three. The West Indies would get out of the powerplay without further damage but to the tune of 3.9 rpo.
The root cause being the struggling duo of Brandon King (13 from 26) and Darren Bravo (18 from 34); who would be put out of their misery by Washington Sundar in the 12th over.
