West Indies will lock horns with Australia in a Test for the first time in seven years when they travel Down Under for a two-match series in December.
The first Test will bowl off November 30 at Perth with the second Test a historic day/nighter at Adelaide Oval bowling off December 8, the two sides clashing over the storied Frank Worrell Trophy.
Head coach Phil Simmons said the recent Test series win over England had further whetted the Caribbean side’s appetite for the upcoming tour.
“I’ve watched a couple day/night games in Australia and it’s a brilliant atmosphere,” said Simmons.
Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy has been conferred with the Sitara-i-Pakistan Award for Services to Pakistan during a ceremony held on Monday. The 38-year-old all-rounder was being recognized for his role in helping bring international cricket back to Pakistan. It is the third-highest civil award conferred by Pakistan.
The citation read in part: “At a time when most of the foreign players backed off from playing cricket in Pakistan for security reasons, it was Mr Daren Sammy, the captain of Peshawar Zalmi, who against all odds helped the cause of restoration of international cricket in Pakistan and highlighted its soft image. Mr Daren Sammy stood out this whole time and has been a true ambassador and flag bearer of Pakistan ever since.”
He expressed his appreciation and gratitude in a post on Instagram on Sunday.
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua - Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirms the resignation of West Indies Senior Men’s and Youth Selector, Ramnaresh Sarwan, due to personal reasons.
Ramnaresh Sarwan was appointed as a Selector for the West Indies Men’s Youth and Selection Panels on January 6, 2022, however, he has informed CWI that he is no longer able to continue in the role.
CWI Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams thanked Ramnaresh for his contributions during his appointment saying, “Given the depth of his experience in the game, we are disappointed that Ramnaresh is unable to continue in the role of Selector, but we fully understand and accept his reasons. We are grateful for his contribution during the period he was involved and hope that he will be able to contribute to West Indies Cricket in some capacity in the future.”
COACH of the Trinidad and Tobago women’s cricket team Kelvin Williams is elated that his team won all five of their matches on tour of Barbados, but said his unit cannot rest on their laurels and improvements can still be made.
TT defeated Barbados in three T20 matches and two 50-over matches in the one-week tour which ended on Wednesday.
Williams said, “The tour was a good one for us. (It was) basically just to see where we are at. The regionals are just around the corner, so it is very important for us having this tour against Barbados.”
Head coach Phil Simmons has given the assurance that West Indies will play at full intensity despite coming up against unfancied Netherlands in the three-match One-Day International series starting here next week.
The Caribbean side are ranked ninth, five spots above their opponents who are ICC associate members, and are heavy favourites to pull off a clean sweep of the series scheduled for the VRA Cricket Ground in Amstelveen.
However, Simmons said that West Indies were taking the series seriously and would not be using it as a trial for newer players even though the Netherlands were not necessarily top-tier opposition.
“We have to play our strongest team,” Simmons stressed.
