BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — As West Indies Women head into their ODI series against South Africa Women, Head Coach Courtney Walsh says they Caribbean women have started the year with great energy and he was pleased with what he saw at the just-ended Cricket West Indies (CWI) medical and fitness camp.
Walsh said he was impressed with what he saw when a squad of the region's best players was in Barbados for the weeklong camp in preparation for the tour to South Africa and the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in New Zealand.
“The medical and fitness screening have given us an idea of where the players are and now we know what our plans are to proceed in our preparations for those selected,” he said, adding that the camp was for the players to reintegrate as a group after the Christmas break."
The West Indies went down by 2 wickets to Ireland on Sunday evening at Sabina Park, as the visitors completed the comeback, in recording a 2-1 series victory, walking away with 20 of the available 30 ICC Super League points.
For the third time in as many games, Ireland won the toss and elected to field. And with more intent than ever before, Shai Hope gave WINDIES their best start of the series. The Barbadian raced to his fastest ever One Day-International (ODI) half-century, bringing up the feat in just 37 deliveries, consequently hauling his team to their highest powerplay score of the series: 74 without loss at the end of 10 overs.
West Indies captain, Kieron Pollard had some strong words following the series loss:
“And yes, we are the face as we play on the field, but there is a holistic approach [that is needed] in order for this thing to move forward. It’s not just us. We can take responsibility for performances on the field, but throughout the region, some of the mediocrity that’s coming out, we tend to praise that. I might get in a lot of trouble for saying what I said, but that is the honest truth."
ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) Women’s Selection Panel today named an 18-member squad for the One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa Women at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg from January 25 to February 7.
The touring squad sees a return for Afy Fletcher, the experienced leg-spinner and right-handed batter, who returns from maternity leave. The squad also includes three uncapped players: Kaysia Schultz, a left-arm orthodox bowler; Mandy Mangru, a right-handed batter; and Jannillea Glasgow, a right-arm medium pacer. The three newcomers were members of the West Indies Women’s A team which played against Pakistan Women’s A-Team last year.
The West Indies U-19s had a less than ideal start to their 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup campaign, as the Rising Stars went down by 6 wickets to Australia in their tournament-opener at Providence on Friday afternoon.
The Caribbean side won the toss and elected to bat, stumbling to 12 for 3 inside the powerplay, as Matthew Nadu, Teddy Bishop and Shaqkere Parris were all sent back in the pavilion having made single-digit—if any—contributions.
The pair of captain Ackeem Auguste and Rivaldo Clarke set about the WINDIES recovery, worrying the Australians for 16.3 overs in a 95-run partnership. But when Clarke (37) was caught a mid-off in the 22nd over, it triggered a middle-order collapse, and the West Indies would lose three wickets for their next five runs, including Auguste for 57.
The only other innings of significance came from McKenny Clarke (29), who hit three sumptuous sixes in the 38th over, in an attempt to stage a lower-order fightback. Australia, however, had other plans, and the hosts’ innings came to an end in the 41st over, with just 169 runs to show for their efforts.
Former West Indies head coach, Ottis Gibson, has decided not to renew his contract as Bangladesh’s fast-bowling coach.
The 52-year-old completed his two-year contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) this month and is set to join Pakistan Super League side Multan Sultans for the start of their campaign on January 27.
BCB’s cricket operations committee chairman, Jalal Yunus, spoke about the situation in an interview with ESPNcricinfo.
Gibson, who played two tests and 15 ODIs for the West Indies between 1995 and 1999, joined Bangladesh in January 2020, replacing former South African fast-bowler Charl Langeveldt.
