LONDON, (CMC) — West Indies Women Captain Hayley Matthews has won a third International Cricket Council Player of the Month award, following her outstanding all-round performances in the recent white-ball series against Pakistan Women.
The stylish, 26-year-old right-hander plundered two hundreds in the three-match One-Day International series to finish with 325 runs at an average of 162 while also taking six wickets, as the Caribbean side pulled off a whitewash in Karachi last month.
Matthews returned in the five Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) to gather 205 runs at an average of 41, and took another six wickets to steer her side to a comfortable 4-1 series win.
The Player of the Month award for the Barbadian follows those she won in October 2023 and November 2021.
“I am really happy to win the award again. These performances resulted in the team’s success — and that’s the most important thing for me as captain,” said Matthews.
A six-wicket haul from Kemar Roach propelled Surrey to a nine-wicket win over Warwickshire on day four of their County Championship Division One clash at the Kennington Oval in London on Monday.
Roach took figures of 6-46 off 14 overs to restrict Warwickshire to 209 all out in 59 overs in their second innings, leaving Surrey needing only 89 to win.
Dom Sibley with 46* and Rory Burns with 30 then led the way as Surrey reached 89-1 in the 23rd over.
Earlier in the game, Warwickshire made 343 in 102.5 overs in their first innings thanks to an excellent 108 from Ed Barnard.
Roach also took 2-81 in the first innings in support of Jordan Clark and Sean Abbott who took 4-64 and 2-51, respectively.
The ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies Bill 2024 was passed unanimously without amendment in the National Assembly on Friday evening, paving the way for critical legislation to be enacted to efficiently and effectively host the global event from June 1-29.
West Indies co-hosts the event with the United States of America.
The Sunset Legislation will cease on June 30.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. hailed the mega event and passage of the Bill as a “fantastic opportunity for the country,” noting that the “commercial elements of the game are evolving, and it means we also have to see the challenges as opportunities.”
This is the biggest T20 World Cup in the sport’s history, as twenty teams will contest matches hosted in Antigua, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago along with Grand Prairie (in Texas), Broward County (Lauderhill, Florida) and Nassau County (in New York).
PRESIDENT of the TT Cricket Board (TTCB) Azim Bassarath has denied claims from the chairman of the South West Zone that an additional $195,112 is missing from its coffers.
In a WhatsApp message to Newsday on May 12, Bassarath said that figure is part of the initial amount of $548,000 that was reported missing in December last year.
A media release on May 11, signed by South West Zone chairman Ramesh Dharamdeo, said, "During the Annual General Meeting in December 2023, the (former) treasurer (Kiswah Chaitoo) disclosed that over $500,000 could not be accounted for. Since then, an additional $200,000 ($195,112) has been added to the tally of unexplained funds, bringing the total to over $700,000 and counting. The latest revelation came today, May 11, at the TTCB’s quarterly meeting."
Asked if this was true, Bassarath said, "The board was informed that the amount of $195,112 is part of the initial figure of $548,000. I informed the membership of this at the meeting last (Saturday) evening."
The Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) have launched a region wide talent search to find a presenter for their broadcast of the 2024 season. The CPL Talent Search is open to all Caribbean residents and the prize for the winner will be a contract to be a pitch side presenter for this year’s event.
This groundbreaking initiative will be searching for the next sports presenting super star from within the region with training on offer for the winning participant so that they can hone their talent and use this amazing opportunity as a springboard to a career in broadcasting.
This is one of the many CPL initiatives that look to develop the next generation of Caribbean talent, but this is the first time that the focus will be on the CPL broadcast which was watched by 853.5million viewers in 2023.
