WEST Indies batting legend Brian Lara said the region will continue to fall behind in world cricket if better facilities and technology are not provided for the players.
Lara, who is in India doing commentary for the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 tournament, was speaking virtually on day two of the Caricom Cricket Conference at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain on Friday.
West Indies were a powerhouse in the 1970s, 1980s and in the first half of the 1990s.
Despite having an abundance of talent, the facilities were not in place to further develop the ability of players in the Caribbean, said Lara.
“The lack of good facilities and academies with the right technology to grow the game kept us aside,” Lara said.

Gudakesh Motie’s brilliant all-round effort fired West Indies-A to a 10-run victory over Nepal in the second Twenty20 of the five-match series here yesterday.
With his side slumping at 115 for seven in the 18th over, the left-handed Motie arrived to smash a sensational eight-ball unbeaten 33 as West Indies ‘A’ rallied to 160 for seven off their 20 overs at Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground.
Andre Fletcher top-scored with 43 from 36 balls while captain Roston Chase weighed in with 23 from 22 deliveries.
The 29-year-old Motie then returned with his left-arm spin to claim two for 22, a spell which helped to restrict the hosts and draw West Indies ‘A’ level in the series ahead of tomorrow’s third encounter.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — The Caribbean Premier League’s chief executive, Pete Russell, has hailed the annual Twenty20 showpiece as one of Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) “largest domestic, commercial partners”, as he robustly defended the league’s positive commercial impact on the region’s cricket landscape.
Speaking on the final day of the two-day Caricom conference on West Indies cricket themed ‘Reinvigorating West Indies Cricket’, Russell outlined the CPL’s financial state of affairs, pointing to its operating costs, losses, investors, and the fact that the league assumed “100 per cent” of all risks involved.
Russell said the CPL had also contributed significantly to player economic welfare, with nearly US$28 million shelled out in salaries since the start of the tournament in 2013.
“Over the past 11 years, cumulative losses, across both the league and franchises, stand at close to US$40 million,” Russell said.
“Dennis O’Brien and Digicel have been the principal investors, not only investing in the league from day one, but they also spent money on sponsorship and media rights.

Fans in the Caribbean will be able to buy ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 tickets directly from box offices from Thursday 2 May and confirm their attendance at the biggest cricket carnival spectacle ever.
To celebrate 30 days to go to the start of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the launch of the official anthem, box offices will open their doors on Thursday until the end of the event across the six host locations in the West Indies.

WEST INDIES fast-bowling legend and former commentator Michael Holding has called on Cricket West Indies (CWI) administrators and the administrators of the various territorial boards to “clean up their act” to push the Caribbean game forward.
Speaking virtually during the morning session at the Caricom Regional Cricket Conference at the Hyatt Regency in Port of Spain on Thursday, Holding, known in his playing days as the “Whispering Death,” made a passionate and emotional call for more transparency and better practices by the regional bodies.
Holding said he was “depressed” after reading CWI’s audited financial statements for 2022/23, as it seemed to him there were several irregularities and even fraudulent activities which were recorded in the document, which was unveiled last month.
“I was fortunate, or some people would say unfortunate, to set my eyes on the most recent audit that was done on the CWI. And when I read that report, I can't say I was shocked because I've heard so many stories,” Holding said.
