Phil Simmons, who coached West Indies to the 2016 T20 World Cup title, has joined Papua New Guinea as a ‘specialist coach’ ahead of the 2024 edition of the tournament in June.
Simmons’ second stint as West Indies coach ended soon after their group-stage elimination at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia and he has worked extensively in franchise cricket since, coaching Trinbago Knight Riders, LA Knight Riders and Karachi Kings.
He will support head coach Tatenda Taibu, the former Zimbabwe wicketkeeper, and Cricket PNG said in a press release that he had been recruited because of his extensive experience of local conditions.
“My role here is as a consultant coach and [will be about] how I put across my experience, not just playing in World Cups but playing in the Caribbean and the things that we should be looking at to make sure we do it right in the Caribbean and especially the venues that we play at.
The Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) fixtures have been confirmed with the matches set to take place in Trinidad from 21 to 29 August. On three of the game days these matches will be part of double headers with the Men’s T20 Internationals between West Indies and South Africa.
This will be the first time that Men’s Internationals will be part of a double header with a Women’s franchise competition with cricket fans able to see the best male and female players taking part in matches on the same ticket.
All of the matches will take place at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad with the double headers taking place on 23 August, 25 August and 27 August.
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel has announced the squad for the upcoming T20 International (T20I) Series against South Africa. This significant series, preceding the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, starts on Thursday, 23 May, at the iconic Sabina Park. The squad has been gearing up for this exciting and highly anticipated series with a training camp held at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.
The Selection Panel has confirmed that Brandon King will be the interim Captain for this series and Roston Chase as the interim Vice-Captain. King was set to lead the West Indies A-Team on the recently concluded T20 tour to Nepal before he was withdrawn due to injury. Chase, appointed instead, went on to lead the A-Team to a series win against Nepal.
The West Indies Men’s squad for the series is as follows:
West Indies will face Australia in a warm-up game, which forms part of the ICC Men’s World T20, which runs from June 1-29 in the Caribbean and USA.
The two sides will square off on May 30 from 19:00 at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad and Tobago, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Thursday.
According to the ICC, the game will be open to fans.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up match fixtures have been announced, scheduled from Monday, May 27 to Saturday, June 1 across the USA and Trinidad and Tobago.
The venues hosting the 16 warm-up matches ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 include Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in Texas, Broward County Stadium in Florida, and Queen’s Park Oval and Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago.
The iconic Kensington Oval is in its best condition in over a decade.
That is according to chairman of the local National Organising Committee (NOC), Noel Lynch, who today revealed that work at the ‘Mecca’ was fully completed, with the venue ready to welcome the thousands of spectators for next month’s ICC T20 World Cup.
Kensington Oval is scheduled to host nine matches in the June 1 to 29 tournament, including the semifinals and finals.
Speaking during a press conference at Cricket Legends this afternoon, Lynch said Kensington Oval was ‘World Cup ready’.
“Kensington Oval is ready. We can play cricket there tomorrow. Barbados may be the most prepared venue in this whole World Cup series. We are going to host the best World Cup cricket ever,” Lynch maintained.
