Former West Indies star batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan questioned the Cricket West Indies` selection of Daren Sammy over Shivnarine Chanderpaul as the West Indies white-ball coach.
The former West Indies captain Sammy, who won T20 World Cups in 2012 and 2016, was appointed coach of the West Indies T20 and 50-over teams on May 12 by CWI.
The decision on the coach was made by Jimmy Adams (CWI's director of cricket), Enoch Lewis, (Chairman of cricket committee), Oneka Martin-Bird, (HR manager), Debra Coryat-Patton (Independent director), and (CWI president) Kishore Shallow.
Posting on his Facebook page Sarwan said, “Twenty-two persons/coaches were interviewed for the white ball coaching position. However, two were shortlisted. The big question is why were the other twenty (20) persons/coaches not made known to CWI directors, and why is this a big secret and is being kept away from the cricketing public? In the interest of transparency, those names should have been made available, at least to directors of CWI.”
Mark Deyal has been transferred to the Trinbago Knight Riders from the Saint Lucia Kings. As part of the same deal Khary Pierre will move from the Knight Riders to the Kings.
Deyal, a top order batter, returns to the Knight Riders, his home franchise, after three seasons with the Kings. Deyal has 446 runs at the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a high score of 78.
Left arm spinner Pierre has been with the Knight Riders since 2017 and has been part of a championship winning team three times. He has 40 wickets at an average of 25 in CPL matches.
The complete squads for the 2023 Republic Bank CPL will be announced during the draft show which will take place at the end of June.
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has commenced the recruitment process for a new Director of Cricket, as the role will become vacant at the end of June when Jimmy Adams contract expires. Adams, who played 54 Tests and 127 One-Day Internationals for the West Indies, has been in the role since January 2017.
Johnny Grave, CWI CEO stated, “We are extremely grateful for the leadership and contribution that Jimmy has made over the past six and half years. He has overhauled our High-Performance structure, especially with respect to Coach Education & Development, Sport Science & Medicine and most recently with the launch of our Academy based at the Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG) in Antigua. I have no doubt that Jimmy will continue to contribute to the game, particularly West Indies Cricket.”
Dr. Kishore Shallow, CWI President added, “Jimmy has always served West Indies Cricket with passion and distinction. His composed demeanor and professionalism have inspired many positive outcomes over the years. One of his legacies would definitely be the commencement of a coaching revolution in the region. On behalf of the CWI Board, we wish him a favorable future path.”
FORMER West Indies women’s captain Merissa Aguilleira has described as “disappointing” some of the performances in the recent CG United Women’s Super50 and T20 Blaze regional competitions.
Aguilleira was speaking to Newsday on Monday, two days after Barbados completed a sweep of the tournaments in St Kitts.
The ex-West Indies wicketkeeper/batter was an assistant coach for the Red Force Divas, who had mixed results in the competitions. TT were runners-up in the Super50, before finishing in fifth place in the T20 Blaze.
Aguilleira, 37, who was named an honorary life member of the Marylebone Cricket Club last month, said the performances were concerning as these were the tournaments being used to select West Indies players.
The regional side has been struggling to replace the void in quality left by Barbadian Deandra Dottin, who retired in August last year; the injury-plagued Jamaican all-rounder Stafanie Taylor; and Mohammed’s decision to take a break from international cricket.
Aguilleira said, “I was really disappointed with the performances throughout the tournament. The wickets were good enough that the teams could have got good scores, but unfortunately it didn’t happen. You can see there is a lot of development (still) to take place.”
Referencing a recent Brian Lara interview discussing the mental aspect of the game, Aguilleira said, “That is exactly what is lacking in the Caribbean right now – the mental part of the game...When it comes to skills, the girls have a lot of talent.”
The St Kitts & Nevis Patriots have confirmed their Caribbean player retentions ahead of the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The tournament gets underway on 16 August with the final taking place on 24 September. There will be matches in Barbados, Guyana, St Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago.
