CHAIRMAN of the West Indies men’s selection panel Desmond Haynes said despite Darren Bravo not playing a Test match in over two years he is still in consideration to earn a recall, calling the left-hander a “class act.”
Bravo, 34, last played a Test match for West Indies in December 2020. Bravo was excluded from the West Indies squad for a two-match Test series starting next week.
Batsmen such as Nkrumah Bonner, Raymon Reifer and Kyle Mayers are among those who have been batting in the West Indies middle order over the last two years leaving Bravo on the sidelines.
Haynes said Bravo’s age is not a reason why he will be overlooked.
“We in the Caribbean do not have the luxury to really talk about age is not on someone’s side. If someone is doing well in our competition I think his name must come up for selection.”

The West Indies Women suffered a 6-wicket defeat to India in their second match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, at Newlands.
Speaking at the post-match media conference, Shakera Selman said "Two games in a row our opening bowlers did not start well and that put on on the back foot early. We should've started better because we bowled second and would've seen how the pitch played in the first innings. Stafanie played a brilliant knock in only her second match this year, but she is a senior player and showed that today. If we continue playing like we are, we are not going to win many games. We aren't batting well and there's not much time until the next match, we know Ireland will be coming at us, so we know we will have to step up."
West Indies 118 for 6 in 20 overs (Stafanie Taylor 42, Shemaine Campbelle 30; Deepti Sharma 3/15, Pooja Vastrakar 1/21).
India 119 for 4 in 18.1 overs (Richa Ghosh 44 not out, Harmanpreet Kaur 33; Karishma Ramharack 2/14, Hayley Matthews 1/12).
The West Indies will take on Ireland Women on Friday 17 February at Newlands in Cape Town. First ball is at 7pm (1pm Eastern Caribbean/12 noon Jamaica). The two teams are drawn in Group 2 alongside England, Pakistan and India.
Newlands, Cape Town; Boland Park, Paarl and St. George’s Park, Gqeberha are the host venues for the tournament with both semi-finals and final being played in Cape Town on 26 February.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced Shai Hope as the new captain of the West Indies Men’s One-Day International (ODI) team and Rovman Powell as the new captain of the West Indies Men’s T20 International (T20I) team. Hope, the wicketkeeper/batter and Powell, the batting allrounder, will take over from Nicholas Pooran, who stepped down from the positions last November following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
The first assignments for both captains will be the upcoming tour of South Africa in March where the West Indies face the Proteas in three ODIs and three T20Is from 16 to 28 March, following two matches in the ICC World Test Championship. Each captain will be heavily involved in strategy and planning leading up to the next ICC World Tournaments. In ODI cricket, the West Indies are likely to need to qualify for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, with the qualifiers scheduled to be held in Zimbabwe in June. In T20I cricket, the West Indies will be hosting the next ICC T20 World Cup with the USA in June 2024.
Hope is selected as ODI captain after demonstrating strong leadership on and off the field and experiencing the vice-captain role over a number of Series since 2019. He became vice-captain for a second time in June 2022 and played his 100th ODI for the West Indies against India in July last year. Hope has played 104 ODIs and was recently selected in the ICC ODI Team of the Year for 2022.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) Men’s Selection Panel named two newcomers, Alick Athanaze and Akeem Jordan, in the 15-member squad for the upcoming two-Test Series against South Africa. Athanaze, the left-handed batter is the captain of Windward Islands Volcanoes while Jordan, the right-arm seam bowler plays for Barbados Pride.
Both have demonstrated good form in the first two rounds of the current four-day West Indies Championship. Athanaze had scores of 41 and 51 against Trinidad & Tobago Red Force in Round 1 and followed up with a career-best 141 against Guyana Harpy Eagles in Round 2. He is a product of the West Indies Under 19s Rising Stars where he was one of the stand-out players at the 2018 ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup. Jordan had match figures of 5-86 against Guyana and followed up with 7-113 against Jamaica Scorpions to be one of the leading wicket-takers in the West Indies Championship after two rounds of matches.
Athanaze and Jordan replace left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican and batter Nkrumah Bonner who were part of the squad for the just-concluded series in Zimbabwe. Jayden Seales is unavailable for selection following a knee injury and subsequent surgery, while Anderson Philiip has returned to training but is not yet match-fit.

Pacer Chinelle Henry said she hoped the performance of West Indies Women against England Women in their ICC Women's Twenty20 World Cup opener can spur them to better things in the remaining matches.
Hopes of the Windies Women landing an upset were dashed when the English brushed them aside by seven wickets on Saturday at Boland Park.
Though the batting of the Caribbean side managed to cobble together a decent 135 for seven from their 20 overs, thanks to a top score of 42 from their Captain Hayley Matthews, the target proved insufficient to hold off England Women, who coasted over the line with 33 balls to spare.
"The result was not what we wanted," Henry said. "But to come here and say that I'm not proud of what we did would be not true.
"Looking at where we were a couple of days ago, or even a month ago when we played England and lost 5-0 to them in the Caribbean, I would say we came out here, and we definitely did compete with them. So, the next three games it's just for us to improve on this performance."
