West Indies legend Clive Lloyd says there is an urgent need for the Cricket West Indies board to hold a cricket symposium to discuss the current state of the game in the region and determine a way forward thereafter.
The former West Indies captain, who was very present at the ongoing 2019 ICC World Cup commentating on the West Indies matches, said it is critical for the CWI to get all the stakeholders involved in these sessions, get their input and use the information collected in these forums.
“We need to have the board set up a cricket symposium and get major stakeholders who can make a difference on board,” Lloyd told Guardian Media.
On Monday July 8th, Cricket West Indies (CWI) released the list of players–both men and women–to be contracted for the 2019-2020 season. For the men’s senior team, contracts were distributed in three categories; all-format, red-ball and white-ball contracts. While the standard ‘central contracts’ were issued for West Indies Women. On the men’s side, three less than the maximum twenty-two players were contracted; these vacancies may be filled throughout the year. The ladies in maroon saw an increase of three, from the previous period, in contracted players; up from twelve to fifteen. The general idea behind central contracts is so a sporting nation’s governing body might have a say in the club competitions in which its players partake—protecting its assets—so that they might be fresh for international duty.
COUVA, Trinidad- Barbados made it back to back titles, when they won the West Indies Rising Stars Under-17 Championship by a mere 2.8 points ahead of Jamaica.
Round 5 was hampered by rain with two of the three matches rained abandoned. At the National Cricket Centre, the Leeward Islands faced 7 overs from Guyana reaching 26/1 when the rain started.
Barbados and Jamaica entered Round 5, 2.9 points apart, sitting in the top two spots on the table, with the championship title on the line. After 9 overs, with the Barbados score on 29/1, the rains came, then stopped, then started to fall again. This forced match officials to take lunch early but there was no restart in sight. Eventually, match officials took the decision to call off the match.
Barbados finished the championship on 17.9 points, 2.8 points ahead of Jamaica who finished on 15.1 points.
Darren Sammy has dusted off his maroon cap and is ready to don it again as captain of the West Indies T20 cricket team.
The two-time winning, World T20 skipper is pledging allegiance to his team for the upcoming series versus India next month and furthermore, says he would accept any opportunity to lead the team into next year’s World T20 in Australia in October.
“I feel I still have a lot to offer in T20 cricket. With the experience I have gained as a player and as a leader I think I have a lot to offer West Indies cricket and fans,” Sammy told Weekend Sport in an exclusive interview.
COUVA, Trinidad- Victories for Barbados and Jamaica in Round 4 of the West Indies Rising Stars Championship see the two teams separated atop the leaderboard by 2.9 points with the title up for grabs heading into the final round on Saturday.
Barbados had an early finish against Trinidad and Tobago, winning by 7 wickets thanks to a brilliant bowling spell by Jaden Leacock who decimated the TT batting lineup. Jaden finished with figures of 7.2-2-8-7.
While at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, the tournament almost had its first century when Teddy Bishop of the Windward Islands came agonizingly close, falling for 96 in his team’s 13-run loss to the Leeward Islands.
Jamaica came away as winners in a low-scoring match against Guyana at Gilbert Park. Jahieem Bartley with 10-6-12-2 and Brandon English 10-5-8-2, ensured that Jamaica walked away with maximum points heading into Round 5.
