ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that Hayley Matthews has been appointed as the West Indies Women’s Captain. Matthews, who is one of the leading allrounders in world cricket, will assume the leadership role from Stafanie Taylor ahead of the next West Indies Women’s Series, expected to be played later this year.
Taylor, the most successful female player in West Indies history and ranked among the all-time greats, has led the team for over seven years since 2015. She was at the helm when West Indies won the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2016 and earlier this year when they reached the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand.
CWI Women’s Selection Panel recommendation was ratified at the CWI Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, 24 June.
After securing the T20 Blaze title last week, Jamaica’s Women are on the verge of a remarkable double as they booked their place in the final of the Women’s Super 50 tournament following an eight-wicket win over Guyana in their rain-affected semi-final at Providence yesterday.
In the 38 overs-per-side affair, Jamaica won the toss and blew away the hosts, Guyana, for a record low of 23 runs off 12 overs, with off-spinner Vanessa Watts and medium-pacer Chinelle Henry both bagging five wickets.
Watts got four of her five wickets via the leg-before wicket route while Henry used her pace and accuracy to great effect to dismantle the Guyana batting unit, with seven batters failing to score and extras of nine being the top score.
West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite is adamant that the team has full confidence in batsman Raymond Reifer who recently took up responsibility at number 3 in the team’s batting line-up.
The batsman is typically known for batting further down the line-up, but during the most recent West Indies Championship made cameos in the position on three occasions. Batting at three, Reifer had notable scores of 79 and 71 and also scored 74 batting at number 4. Overall, he scored 345 runs from 5 matches.
“Mentally he is a very strong character but batting at three for Barbados would certainly have propelled this decision and we back him 100 percent,” Brathwaite told members of the media on Thursday.

In the rain-affected encounter that caused the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern system to come into play, Trinidad and Tobago women won the toss and posted 133 all out in 31.2 overs, which were an over and four balls short of their allotted 33 overs.
Barbados led by captain Hayley Matthews made light work of the target scoring 137 for one in 30.2 overs and sent a strong message to the winners of tomorrow’s second semifinal between host Guyana and Jamaica that they will need to come extremely good to derail Barbados’ championship quest.
