ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel today named the West Indies “A” Team for the upcoming tour of South Africa. The West Indies will play three four-day “Test” matches against South Africa “A” from 21 November to 8 December.
Joshua Da Silva, the wicket-keeper/batsman has again been named as captain following the West Indies “A” victory in the series in Bangladesh earlier this year. Tevin Imlach, the other wicket-keeper/batsman has been named as the vice-captain.
The 14-member squad includes five players with Test match experience: Da Silva; batsmen Kirk McKenzie, and Tagenarine Chanderpaul; along with fast bowlers Jayden Seales and Shermon Lewis.
The squad also includes three newcomers to the international level: Kevlon Anderson, the right-handed batsman; fast bowler Shamar Joseph, and allrounder Abhijai Mansingh. All three made their first-class debuts earlier this year.
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CMC) - Seven Test players have been named in a strong 15-man South Africa 'A' squad to face West Indies 'A' in a three-match four-day series bowling off here later this month.
Batsmen Keegan Petersen, Tony de Zorzi, and Zubayr Hamza, along with fast bowlers Duanne Olivier, Dane Patterson, and Hardus Viljoen, and off-spinner Dane Piedt will form the nucleus of the squad led by Neil Brand, a left-arm spinning all-rounder who is without Test experience.
Experienced first-class batsman David Bedingham, rising batting star Ruan de Swardt, seasoned gloveman Clyde Fortuin, and inexperienced fast-bowling all-rounder Mihlali Mpongwana have been called up for the first time.
"We've selected a blend of experienced campaigners and promising talents for the upcoming South Africa 'A' tour against West Indies 'A'," said Proteas red-ball Coach Shukri Conrad.
The Leeward Islands Hurricanes and the Trinidad & Tobago Red Force will contest the final of the 2023 CG United Super50 Cup after the Hurricanes booked their spot with a dominant 155-run win over the Barbados Pride at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on Thursday.
The Hurricanes won the toss and chose to bat first, posting a formidable 290 all out off 49.4 overs thanks to half-centuries from Jahmar Hamilton, Justin Greaves and Hayden Walsh Jr.
Hamilton top scored with a 61-ball 76, his third fifty of the competition, including six fours and four sixes while Greaves, the leading run-scorer in the tournament, got his fourth consecutive 50-plus score with 63 off 76 balls including five fours.
Walsh Jr, batting at number eight, got his second fifty of the tournament with a rapid 45-ball 57 including one four and five sixes to propel the Hurricanes to their massive total.
Off-spinner Kemar Smith, brother of former West Indies batsman Dwayne Smith, got his maiden five-wicket haul for the Pride with 5-43 off his 10 overs. Dominic Drakes and Raymon Reifer provided good support with two wickets, each.
West Indies captain Hayley Matthews has been rewarded for her superb recent form by being crowned the ICC Women's Player of the Month award for October 2023.
Matthews held off determined challenges from Bangladesh spinner Nahida Akter and New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr to claim the award, after a dominant period of play against Australia during the month.
The 25-year-old smashed scores of 99*, 132 and 79 in a Player of the Series performance during the T20I component of the West Indies' tour of Australia
Matthews also chipped in with an excellent spell of 3-36 during the second match of that three-game series to help the Caribbean side to a memorable victory.
The all-rounder then backed up those efforts with strong contributions during the ODI leg of the Australia tour, with scores of 20 and 23 during the two completed 50-over contests to cap off a huge month for the West Indies star.
SPINNER Sunil Narine, who announced his retirement from international and national cricket last weekend, was honoured by the TT Cricket Board (TTCB) on Wednesday.
Narine was officially honoured by the TTCB with the presentation of a commemorative plaque before the CG United Super50 semi-final between the TT Red Force and Guyana Harpy Eagles at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba. TTCB vice-president Arjoon Ramlal presented Bassarath with the plaque.
TTCB president Azim Bassarath said he was pleased to hear that Red Force were hoping to win the CG United Super50 Cup as a perfect send-off for Narine who will be wearing the red, white and black for the final time.
“We wish to express our appreciation for the great accomplishments of Sunil now that he has made a decision to end his international career which must be respected,” said Bassarath.
