Sherfane Rutherford's maiden ODI century helped West Indies break their 11-match losing streak against Bangladesh with a five-wicket win in St Kitts. The home side hunted down a target of 295 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with Rutherford's 80-ball 113 comprehensively overturning a slow start to the chase. West Indies, who had at one point needed 161 off 114 balls, reached their target with 14 balls remaining.
Rutherford, who was struck twice on his helmet during his innings, reached his century when Bangladesh conceded six runs via overthrows in the 47th over. He celebrated the milestone with consecutive sixes off Soumya Sarkar, over long-off and midwicket. Then he squeezed one to short third man where Nahid Rana completed a catch, but by then West Indies only needed seven more.
Rutherford struck seven fours and eight sixes as he went from 19 off 29 balls in the 32nd over to score a further 94 runs in 51 balls. He now has five consecutive 50-plus scores in ODIs, becoming the fourth West Indian after Gordon Greenidge, Chris Gayle and Shai Hope, who have six in a row each, to achieve this feat.
Rutherford added 99 runs for the fourth wicket with captain Hope who contributed an 88-ball 86 after coming in at 27 for 2. Then Rutherford and Justin Greaves blasted 95 runs off just 57 balls for the fifth wicket. Greaves scored the winning runs and finished on an unbeaten 41 off 31 balls with five fours.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) regrets to announce that a quorum was not met for today’s pivotal meeting on governance reform, as the representatives of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) failed to attend having opted not to appoint two representatives as required by the company's Articles of Association. Guyana formally indicated their non-attendance, while Barbados did not provide a response. This marks the second time that both the GCB and BCA have opted not to attend a meeting of the members, the first instance occurring in 2021. All other Full Member shareholders from Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA), Leeward Islands Cricket Board (LICB), Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB), and Windward Islands Cricket Board (WICB) were present and prepared to proceed.
CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow expressed disappointment over the absence of these two key shareholders stating,
"It is deeply disappointing that representatives from Guyana and Barbados did not see the importance of being present at this crucial juncture for the future of West Indies cricket. Governance reform is critical to ensuring our organization’s growth, sustainability, and ability to inspire pride across the region. This moment required unity and collaboration, and their absence undermines the collective effort required to move forward."
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that Jamaica Scorpions captain John Campbell has been suspended for four matches following a Level 3 Charge related to his conduct during the CG United Super50 Final against Barbados Pride on 23 November 2024.
The charge, issued by Match Referee Reon King in accordance with the CWI Code of Conduct for Players and Officials, relates to Campbell's decision to not attend the toss as instructed by the umpires. In a letter to the Match Referee, Campbell apologized for the disruption.
“I sincerely regret any disruption caused during the final and acknowledge that my actions may have been perceived as resistance to the match officials’ decision,” Campbell stated.
Outgoing ICC chairman Greg Barclay has questioned whether structural change to the board's membership system is needed, advocating for the abolition of Full Member status and breaking up West Indies into island teams.
Barclay completed his term as ICC chair on December 1, handing over the position to Jay Shah for the next three years. In an interview with Telegraph Sport during the Christchurch Test match between England and New Zealand, Barclay touched on several subjects relevant to his tenure, among them the future of Test match cricket, and whether it was feasible for all countries that currently play it to continue to do so.
In particular, he highlighted the plight of Cricket West Indies, which has faced significant financial difficulty over the last few years, particularly heightened during the Covid-19 pandemic. Under the ICC's model from 2024-27, West Indies will receive a less than a five per cent share of ICC earnings.
“You look at the West Indies, I love what they’ve done for the game, but is the West Indies in its current form sustainable?” said Barclay. “Is it time for them to break into each of their islands?
Fast bowlers Marquino Mindley and Jediah Blades have been drafted into the West Indies Men’s ODI squad for the three match CG UNITED series against Bangladesh in St Kitts & Nevis.
The pair will replace Matthew Forde and Shamar Joseph respectively.
The medical team on further assessment determined that Forde must continue rehabilitation from a a sustained injury.
Additionally, Joseph is suffering from shin splints following the completion of the recent test series and will be monitored by the medical staff ahead of future assignments.
